Since Heatmap News' inception, I've had a strong desire to work with the organization. They're at the forefront of #climate and #cleantech reporting, reaching broad audiences that, as a marketer, I've historically found both challenging and critical to engage. Now, with Edge Zero, I finally get to make my dream a reality! Join us on November 7th to talk about the state of the distribution system and the need for real-time insights. Details in registration link below!

Last week, I had the chance to interview Ali Zaidi, President Biden’s national climate advisor, at Yale’s clean energy conference in New Haven. Our conversation touched on so many big issues: the tariff on Chinese solar panels, whether permitting reform will happen by the end of the year, how to balance clean electricity and AI, and how (in his view) the global trading system needs to accommodate climate policy. And now you can listen to it! It’s this week’s episode of Shift Key, available for free at Heatmap News or wherever you get your podcasts: Heatmap: https://lnkd.in/g6hznXzP Apple: https://lnkd.in/gUQamWHm Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gT3_yBYk This was a great conversation and I hope you make some time for it. Hydrostor recently partnered with Heatmap News to explore some of the ways that renewable energy and long duration storage are transforming the grid. Learn how: Download the white paper.
As renewable energy is added to the grid, the urgency to deploy Long Duration Energy Storage (#LDES) grows alongside. Hot off the press, our new white paper with Heatmap News explores why #LDES is essential for stabilizing the grid in a world increasingly powered by renewables. The path towards a decarbonized grid is well underway, and some energy markets are on the verge of a tipping point, where renewables will provide more than 50 percent of supply. This is great news for the planet, but it also means that markets need to incorporate more storage to maximize availability and prevent curtailment. To ensure a reliable and clean energy future, #LDES deployment must be prioritized hand-in-hand with renewable generation. As someone deeply immersed in the intersection of technology and sustainability, I was struck by the insights from Heatmap News' coverage of the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2024 World Energy Outlook. It's not every day that a report challenges the prevailing discourse, especially regarding the energy consumption of data centers in the age of AI. Given the usual concerns expressed about this topic, I find it imperative to share this accurate perspective, which sheds light on the actual scale of energy consumption by data centers compared to other technological initiatives aimed at combating climate change. Key takeaways: * Data centers are expected to account for less than 10% of the global electricity demand growth by 2030, a figure that's on par with the demand from desalination technologies. * Electric vehicle adoption is emerging as a more significant factor in the increase of electricity demand. * The demand for cooling, a direct consequence of rising temperatures due to climate change, could add over 1,200 terawatt-hours of additional demand by 2035. * The IEA highlights the potential positive impacts of AI, including enhanced coordination in the power sector and accelerated innovation. * The growth of clean energy sources is outpacing the rise in electricity use by data centers, suggesting a sustainable path forward. * The impact of data centers on local grids is noteworthy and demands targeted solutions, as their effects can be acutely felt in certain regions. It's essential that we continue to push for a nuanced understanding of these issues, recognizing the importance of each technological advance in the broader context of our climate goals. #climatechange #cleanenergy #AI #datacenters #energyconsumption

There are a lot of myths about electrification. Have you heard the one about heat pumps that can’t work in cold climates? How about one that says EVs are more expensive than gas cars? It’s time to bury these old chestnuts and understand just how powerful electrification will be. For the record: heat pumps are twice as efficient as fossil fuel heating systems are in cold temperatures. And when it comes to EVs, you’ll be spending between $18,000 and $24,000 less over the lifetime of your car than if you owned a gas vehicle. These numbers come from a new report by Heatmap Labs that underlines just how much we have to gain from electrification. > https://lnkd.in/eWV2JAUi [Heatmap News / Rewiring America] Here are some more nuggets of information. Even though many home cooks and chefs are smitten by gas stoves, electric induction stoves get hotter faster, without producing indoor air pollution. Replacing fossil fuel appliances like stoves with electric versions can save your family $2,000 per year on your energy bills. Add solar panels and those savings can rise to $3,000 per year. Of course, when you do that, you’ll need to manage it well to maximize efficiency. That’s where co-optimization comes in. Instead of operating independently, a smart home energy system can make sure your solar panels, EV and electric appliances are all working together harmoniously. It can save you up to 66% compared to a non-optimized system, according to the Energy Collective Group. > https://lnkd.in/eCxQgzqj [Energy Central] Set it and forget it: that’s the idea. And it’s why dcbel Ara is not only the gateway to intelligent electrification, but also the brains behind making a good thing even better. > https://lnkd.in/eCBjgisH By constantly evaluating the best ways to store, consume or sell your energy, Ara brings you the ultimate way to lower your carbon footprint, save money and ensure you always have energy.

IMAP affiliated faculty Madison Condon talks about Zillow’s new climate risk data, including how best to handle flood risk with Robinson Meyer of Heatmap News. #ClimateRisk #FloodRisk #ClimateData https://lnkd.in/ebya2Ywk
everyone—not only homebuyers, but banks, municipal bond investors, regulators—just wants to be directed to that good climate risk dataset, but it’s unfortunately a lot more complicated than that. if you're buying a home, try to find recent flood maps for your area produced by local engineers that take into account granular (but very important) things like stormwater infrastructure (something national-scale models likely miss). if you're a large financial institution, the most important thing is to have in-house expertise to help you evaluate products and make expert-informed judgment calls. your job posting for "climate risk modelers" should actually require knowledge of the science of climate change!!! what are we doing?? talked about some of this with Heatmap's Rob Meyer here:
