Co-founder & Head of Strategy at Heirloom | Innovating Scalable Climate Solutions at the Nexus of Technology, Commercialization, and Policy

After an incredible journey co-founding and building Heirloom, I’m transitioning into a new role as an advisor. From day one, Heirloom was more than just a company, it was a leap of faith on a big idea that felt both urgent and impossible. The vision was clear: develop a scalable and affordable way to pull carbon dioxide out of the air to help address climate change. Now, with commercial projects underway, a world-class team in place, and growing momentum across the carbon removal ecosystem, Heirloom is well-positioned to scale its impact. At the same time, I’ve been reflecting on where I can make the greatest impact on climate. Building solutions is one piece of the puzzle, but scaling them requires the right policy, markets, and incentives to make carbon removal a reality at a global scale. That’s where I’m headed next. I’ll be focusing my energy on shaping the frameworks that will help carbon removal move from early-stage deployment to full-scale impact. More on this soon, so stay tuned 🔊 None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. Building something this ambitious takes dedication, creativity, and perseverance. It takes trust and a shared belief that we can push beyond what seems possible. One of my greatest honors has been helping to build the Heirloom team and technology. I’ve learned more than I ever imagined, and I’m truly grateful to carry those lessons forward. To the entire Heirloom team and everyone who has supported this journey: thank you. This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait for what’s ahead.

This is Shashank Samala, Co-Founder & CEO of Heirloom. Heirloom is scaling very fast through continuous innovation...and scaling quickly is exactly what we need right now. As he says “when you figure out how to give superpowers to limestone, all you need to do is get more limestone, build more trays, stack more trays vertically, and make those stacks taller.” Their aim is to remove 1 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2035 and by the looks of it, they will get there. For more exciting innovations, watch Legion 44 currently available here: http://www.legion44.world    and while watching, you can remove CO2 with Heirloom as well as other visionary companies. Let's create a world that works, together ✨ 💪 🔥

As a kid growing up in India, I would gaze up at airplanes streaking across the sky, convinced they were the most magical machines in the world. I can still recall the thrill of my first flight—a journey that carried me not only into the clouds but also to America, a land of boundless possibility that I am now proud to call home. When we started Heirloom, we knew that as we bring down the cost of our Direct Air Capture (DAC) solution, we can start to help decarbonize aviation. Today, we made another meaningful step towards that goal: I’m excited to share that the United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund, part of the largest airline in the world by fleet size, has partnered with Heirloom to scale Direct Air Capture. This partnership includes an agreement for the right to purchase 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal and an equity investment in Heirloom, building on our recent $150M Series B round in December 2024. The agreement enables The Fund to use the captured CO₂ for both permanent underground storage and as an input feedstock for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This partnership validates DAC's critical dual role in helping aviation achieve Net Zero: as both a carbon removal solution and a key enabler of SAF production, addressing both sides of the Net Zero equation and creating two complementary commercial opportunities for our technology. Thank you, Mukul Hariharan, Andrew Shen, Andrew Chang and many others for this incredible partnership—the beautiful model airplane sits proudly on my desk :) Our blog post on why SAF + DAC can help achieve Net Zero https://lnkd.in/gdvFb26U Fast Company: https://lnkd.in/gcccS6PY Trellis:   https://lnkd.in/gzVye97e

  • 🌍 Big News: Heirloom and the United Airlines Sustainable Flight Fund are joining forces to scale DAC as a critical tool to enable Net Zero aviation. ✈️ In addition to an equity investment in Heirloom – which builds on our recent $150M Series B round – the Fund also entered into an agreement for the right to purchase up to 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR), to be delivered for the production of sustainable aviation fuel or permanently stored underground. Why this matters: Aviation faces unique decarbonization challenges. The path to Net Zero requires both reducing emissions AND removing residual ones. While Direct Air Capture (DAC) is typically seen as just a removal solution, in aviation it's a powerful tool for both: 1️⃣ When used to produce SAF, our DAC CO2 can help create fuel that's up to 94% less carbon intensive than conventional jet fuel. Importantly, this fuel can be developed with CO2 that is ALREADY in Earth’s atmosphere, rather than extracting new sources of carbon from deep underground. 2️⃣ Since even the cleanest SAF will generate some CO2 emissions, our core CO2 removal capability remains crucial for achieving true Net Zero aviation. So how does this play out in the future? The answer is: we will need a lot more DAC to both generate cleaner fuels through SAF and remove those emissions that can’t be eliminated. Net Zero aviation requires a dual-pronged approach – and DAC can be a critical input to both sides. We’re proud to be partnering with United to move toward a future where Net Zero aviation is not just an aspirational promise but an operational reality. 🛫 Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dEeKFVwE

🌎 I help climate CEOs grow (private peer groups & coaching) ☑️ I post on startups, finance, climate change 🔋 Investor, Founder, Professor, Coach, Podcaster, Newsletter Writer, "Monk"

Lessons from mobilizing $800M for carbon dioxide removal: So great to have Shashank Samala, CEO of Heirloom, join my “Climate Tech Startups and Investors” class at Duke University. Some key takeaways... Having experienced the impacts of climate change firsthand growing up in southeast India, climate change and its impacts on vulnerable populations have been on Shashank’s mind long before founding Heirloom. After moving to the US as a teenager, he studied mechanical engineering at Cornell, but maintained multidisciplinary interests in psychology, finance, and nuclear engineering. Shashank started his career at Square, before founding his first company, Tempo Automation. While successful, he never forgot his interests in climate change and helping others, and after becoming a self-taught expert in carbon removal, he founded Heirloom in 2020. Heirloom is now one of the leading CDR companies, having raised over $200M from investors including Lowercarbon Capital, Breakthrough Energy , MCJ, and Mitsubishi, and secured customers like Microsoft, Stripe, and Shopify. Heirloom’s direct air capture technology uses limestone to pull carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, helping move us toward a carbon-negative future. In addition to impressive venture funding, the company is part of a group that has also secured $600M in grant funding from the Department of Energy to build a million-ton scale facility in Louisiana that will create nearly 1,000 new jobs. An early mover in the CDR space, Shashank shared with students the importance of conviction, rapid innovation, and constant learning, as well as the mindset that has allowed him to found two successful companies in the last ten years. Shout out to my two awesome TA's: Mudit Agrawal Tyler Ratcliffe Thanks to Scott Coriell for helping coordinate.
