Black women have up to 3x higher risk of premature death from heart disease compared to white women. It's long past time to do something about this alarming disparity. Black women’s heart health took centerstage at this year’s Women’s Heart Health Summit where panelists Adimika Arthur, Oyere K. Onuma, Oluwabunmi "Bunmi" Ogungbe, and Tambra Raye Stevenson discussed the systemic issues driving disparities as well as actionable solutions that can support Black women's health. From increasing Black representation in healthcare to advocating for policy change, we all have a role to play. Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the most common causes of death in the U.S., and that’s not the only cost. Health care spending and lost economic productivity are expected to add up to nearly $1.9 trillion by 2050. But we can still change the course. Reducing risk factors – including diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure – will be key.
