Last week, Hobbs+Black staff rolled up their sleeves and volunteered at Food Gatherers, helping fight hunger in Washtenaw County. This month’s #HobbsBlack60 Signature Project takes us back to Ann Arbor, where a historic fire station became the beloved Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. In 1982, Hobbs+Black reimagined the 1904 fire station into a vibrant interactive museum. Our team preserved the character of the historic architecture, blending it seamlessly with modern design to create dynamic spaces that inspire curiosity and exploration. The museum has become a cornerstone of Ann Arbor’s cultural landscape, drawing families, school groups, and visitors from across the region. For six decades, Hobbs+Black has embraced opportunities to honor the past while designing for the future, and this project remains one of our most celebrated achievements. As someone who grew up with a 616 area code, it's exciting for Hobbs+Black Architects to settle in to the Creston neighborhood in NE Grand Rapids. Furniture trucks are on their way. Doors opening soon.

Hobbs+Black Architects is proud to be at the forefront of Downtown Lansing's transformative "New Vision" project. Our team is designing over 500 new housing units across three main sites. The Tower on Grand will become Lansing's tallest building. Washington Square Apartments will involve renovating an existing office building into an apartment building, and Capitol Tower will be a mixed-use building with apartments and office space. The main objective is to connect key parts of the city, encouraging more foot traffic and interaction along the riverfront. With our Lansing office serving the community for nearly 40 years, we are excited to contribute to a more connected and vibrant downtown. The project will create over 150 workforce housing units and incorporate green spaces and entertainment venues to strengthen local businesses. We are honored to contribute to Lansing's growth and promote a more connected and accessible urban landscape. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the face of downtown Lansing for generations to come", says Pat Gillespie.
