“8 Ways to Design for Disabled Joy” was featured in CreativeMornings' October blog post, which focuses on the theme of VISION—exploring how people see the world and how they wish to change it. Hannah Silver and Monse Fonseca created this one-hour training to share how designers can go “above and beyond the ADA”, making spaces that are comfortable for all. Huge congrats to our friends at Ground Workshop for the recognition of Eagle View Park, which took home two ASLA Oregon Awards last Friday—an Honor Award (General Design), and an Award of Honor (Green Ribbon Award for Biodiversity and Climate Action).   Together, Eagle View Park and Ninebark form a sustainable new waterfront community along the Columbia River in southwest Washington that celebrates the local ecology and brings people together. We’re thankful for our continued collaboration and your dedication to design that makes a positive impact.

Comprised of seven one-bedrooms and 54 studio units, the building includes a community room/classroom and on-site services to support residents. Members of the Holst team worked hard over the weekend painting a mural and building an accessible planter bed with Growing Gardens and Providence Portland Medical Center, located in NE Portland. The Goal: Provide a serene respite area for healthcare providers as well as opportunities to explore horticultural therapy with patients. Holst joined this collaboration, providing the mural, an accessible planter bed, lessons on how to construct the planter bed from Joshua Fox, and many staff to help implement the design. The mural brightens the garden with lively colors while the planter bed provides an equitable opportunity for visitors in wheelchairs to garden comfortably. The 32-color mural design was inspired by the work of Bauhaus fiber artist Anni Albers. The folks at Growing Gardens selected the final color scheme from options provided by Sarah Vaz, which just happens to go perfectly with the flowers in the garden. Huge thank you to Jessie Nutz for championing this event, and all of Holst's volunteer projects.
