In 2019, when Cindy Southwell found a bump in her anus, her doctor summed it up to a hemorrhoid until she insisted on a rectal exam. The diagnosis: HPV-16+ anal cancer. When I interviewed Cindy, she bravely opened up about a cancer that many don't want to talk about. HPVANDME hopes that Cindy's story will be watched and shared so more people learn about early symptoms and what to expect from treatment. In 2024, new anal cancer cases topped 10K in the US alone, with about 2,190 deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. The HPV vaccine helps prevent six types of HPV cancers, including anal cancer. For clinicians and advocates, perhaps the biggest challenge of HPV cancer prevention work is navigating the fact that the route of transmission is sexual. Do we talk about that? Do we underplay the HPV connection and focus on cancer prevention? That's been the playbook and HPV vaccination rates have declined. In her new book, "Sexualizing Cancer, HPV and the Politics of Cancer Prevention, San Francisco State University Professor Laura Mamo examines the sexualization of cancer since HPV vaccines became available. Her research reveals how the phenomenon has shaped vaccine guidelines, clinical trial funding, research practices, clinical programs—and public perception. Her work informs today's scientists, clinicians, and educators. I am grateful that Mamo included the work of HPVANDME, building awareness about #HPV #throatcancer #HPVvaccine #headandneckcancer #cervicalcancer #analcancer #cancerprevention #cancersurvivor #endcancer #publichealth Watch interview on the HPVANDME YouTube Channel (below). In 2015, HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer (base of tongue/throat/tonsils) became the #1 HPV cancer in the US, surpassing incidents of cervical cancer—five years before predicted. There are many HPV cancer survivors who will not reveal the HPV connection. One man whom I interviewed chose not to tell his family; his grandchildren remain unvaccinated. Today, March 4 is Int'l HPV Awareness Day. Please take a moment today to learn and share how to prevent six HPV cancers.
