IBM HBCU Quantum Center Student Highlight of the week is Cornelius Bra’Jion Salonis. My name is Cornelius Bra’Jion Salonis, and I am a senior at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in #Physics. As an IBM HBCU Quantum Center Scholar, this experience has profoundly shaped my academic and professional trajectory, particularly in #Quantum Information Science and Quantum Materials. The IBM HBCU Quantum Center not only deepened my scientific knowledge but aligned my academic pursuits with my evolving career goals, allowing me to merge my aspirations with the broader mission of advancing quantum science. As a Black physicist at an #HBCU, I have firsthand experience with the challenges and stigmas surrounding physics in minority communities. Through the IBM HBCU Quantum Center, I discovered the transformative potential of quantum science and the importance of diverse representation in the field. Engaging with scholars like Jada Emodogo, Johan Lingani, and Robert Coleman Jr., and participating in conferences, summer schools, and career fairs, I have refined my ambitions and contributed to my community by showcasing the wonders of physics". #quantum #quantumScience #HBCU #BlackExcellence #IBMHBCUSCHOLAR

Hello LinkedIn family, I am excited to share my experience from an incredible summer as a 2024 Open Quantum Initiative Fellow in the Awschalom Lab at the University of Chicago. During this fellowship, I studied Charge State Dynamics of Vanadium Defects in Silicon Carbide, which taught me valuable skills in experimental design, cryogenics, and quantum physics. One of the biggest takeaways from this fellowship was learning how to use python to control my entire experiment. I was able to change the wavelength and the power of each laser and turn them on/off, while instructing my data acquisition device to know when to start collecting data. I worked a lot on improving my problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. I am grateful for this fellowship under the mentorship of Nolan Bitner, and Chloe Washabaugh, and the support and guidance I received from the rest of the Awschalom Laboratory and the Chicago Quantum Exchange. It was a wonderful academic research experience. I am truly inspired by the culture at the University of Chicago, which values innovation and collaboration. I can’t wait to apply what I’ve learned in the future. Also during this time, I was able to visit IBM’s research center in Yorktown, NY. I want to say thank you to the IBM HBCU Quantum Center for providing me with this wonderful opportunity! If you’re interested in connecting or learning more about my experience, feel free to reach out!

Happy New Month, Everyone! September marks the four-year anniversary of the IBM HBCU Quantum Center and our ongoing mission to create a pipeline of success for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We are dedicated to preparing students for careers in quantum research. This September also ushers in the beginning of the IBM HBCU Quantum Center's Women in Quantum Series, which will be held in person at Spelman College. We are excited to highlight Dr. Kayla Lee, PhD Lee who on September 26, 2024, will be a featured speaker at the up-coming Women in Quantum series panel discussion. Dr. Lee earned her B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Hampton University before pursuing her master's and Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University. Currently, she leads strategic alliances at IBM Quantum and is the co-founder of the IBM HBCU Quantum Center. Dr. Lee is a remarkable example of a woman in quantum who not only thrives but also creates an ecosystem of excellence through #HBCUs. The countdown continues, in just 7 days the IBM HBCU Quantum Center will host our opening meeting! Again, all are invited to join! Our spotlight testimonial of this week is Jada Emodogo. This is what she has to say about her IBM HBCU Quantum Center #experience. "Greetings! I am Jada Emodogo, a recent #Physics #graduate of Jackson State University... One of the most #impactful moments, for me, as a IBM HBCU Quantum Center #Scholar was when the IBM HBCU Quantum Center brought all [the] #Scholars together at the March 2024 NSBE Professionals | National Society of Black Engineers #Conference. There, we were granted #unprecedented access to #professionals in the field, and we forged #connections that extend far beyond a typical cohort. Theses like-minded individuals are not just my peers—they are my future #colleagues. Connecting with them has given me a deep sense of #belonging and #reassurance, knowing that I’m surrounded by people who share my passion and vision. It’s empowering to realize that we’re not just building our careers together—we’re building a future where we can uplift and support one another every step of the way. At the conference, I had the privilege of co-moderating the panel “#Entrepreneurship & Innovation in Quantum” alongside fellow scholar Cornelius Bra’Jion Salonis. The IBM HBCU Quantum Center has been pivotal in shaping my academic and professional journey. The resources and support provided by the IBM HBCU Quantum Center were instrumental in my #acceptance into the Harvard University Quantum Initiative (HQI) #Post-Baccalaureate Program. The Center also enabled me to attend the Harvard University #Quantum Noir conference, where my experiences were featured in the Harvard University #Gazette, further highlighting the Center’s commitment to nurturing emerging #scholars in #quantum research.”
