📝 Dignity should be at the core of delivering aid, but too often, people in need face indignity. Pulte Institute for Global Development and IDinsight's Dignity Initiative propose a Dignity Agenda that responds directly to the life experiences of aid recipients. In their #PolicyBrief, they highlight the most pressing improvements needed to respect dignity. These include: 1️⃣ In-person meetings with recipients 2️⃣ Supporting community-based organizations to speak up 3️⃣ Co-design workshops with recipients before implementation. 📝 Read our recommendations in detail ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gf6pywD5

Experienced quantitative & qualitative researcher | Monitoring & Evaluation | Project management & policy engagement | Focus: development, food security, livelihoods, mobility, transport, welfare, gender
Last week, World Bicycle Relief and IDinsight launched a research report on the impact of bicycle mobility among adults in Mumbwa district, Zambia. I am proud as part of the team that worked on this research and 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: from improving incomes to ensuring healthcare access. Importantly, 𝗕𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 boosted resilience during a year with climatic shocks that adversely impacted welfare levels in affected districts, including Mumbwa district. Through this research, we have found that compared to those without, Buffalo Bicycles owners in Mumbwa had on average: 🍲 24% higher consumption of food and non-food household items. 💰 43% higher household income. 💸 50% higher income among women. 🚲 22% lower time spent travelling resulting in improved productivity. 🏥 63% more clients served by community health workers. 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, I reflected on the incredible impacts of bicycles that I have witnessed firsthand from recipients in Mumbwa, not just from recipients who participated in this one year research, but also among those who have owned Buffalo Bicycles for more than two years. One tomato farmer said she had 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲. An entrepreneur reported that he had 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 from his increased incomes and reduced transportation costs. Another trader said he had 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 thanks to savings from reduced transportation costs. A community health worker said she is able to reach more households with much needed healthcare services. I have been most incredibly delighted to see the 𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 as Buffalo Bicycle owners talk about what their bicycle means to them. This shows in the smiles women wear on their faces when speaking about how bicycles have 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗲 that they used to experience from walking long distances or carrying heavy water pots on their heads. It manifests in how 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗽𝘀 and bounds because they can easily transport goods to markets. It is evident in their smiles when they talk about the freedom and convenience that their bicycles offer them. It is radiant with their pride to own a transportation tool that offers them 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
