IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home.

About us

IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home—and we’ve been leading the way for over 50 years. The problems we confront are urgent, complicated, and resistant to change. Solving them requires fresh thinking and bold action. So we look at the issues from different angles, make unexpected connections, and challenge the way things are done. Partnering with local communities, NGOs, and governments around the globe, we create real-world solutions that make an immediate and lasting impact.

Earlier this month, IFAW hosted a series of enlightening events at the Alibaba Global and Cainiao Headquarters, spotlighting an exhibit that brilliantly captured the essence of our Room to Roam initiative. This exhibit not only celebrated IFAW's remarkable 30-year journey and milestones in China, but also embodied the organization's commitment to environmental sustainability. In a creative and eco-conscious choice, the use of environmentally-friendly corrugated cardboard as the medium for the exhibit underscored both IFAW's achievements and our dedication to promoting a greener future.

Even after 25 years, we’re still challenging the way things are done! 🐬 IFAW continues to pioneer the way we rescue, research and release dolphins, and our new Dolphin Rescue Center is an exciting way to see that belief in action. This state-of-the-art facility is the first of its kind, giving even more dolphins a second chance at life after stranding. Activities conducted under a federal stranding agreement between IFAW and the NMFS under the MMPA. #IFAW #Dolphins #DolphinRescue #CapeCod

Technology has completely changed the way we understand and study wildlife—for the better! For example, we can collect location data, track herd movements, and even know how much battery life remains on an elephant satellite collar before it needs replacing. Innovations like this one will allow science-backed data to inform strong decisions for elephants and local communities for generations to come!

President & CEO at International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) | Conservation Expert | Advocate for Communities living with Wildlife & Biodiversity Protection | New book: The Couscous Chronicles, Disruptionbooks.com.

One of the accomplishments that I'm very proud of at ifaw, is our #AcademyOfRescueAndConservation (ARC). The academy is more than just about sharing information and passing down our expertise acquired from being in the conservation field for over 50 years--it's about turning every call of distress into an opportunity to save an animal and advance our collective knowledge. A shoutout here to the #SuzanneMcGrawFoundation, for their generous contribution and funding of ARC--helping us reach more people around the world and enable them to support communities living alongside wildlife, protecting animals, and ultimately safeguarding our planet. #Conservation #WildlifeRescue #Technology #Education https://lnkd.in/evTwCW3K

#Meeresschutz #Walfang #StopWhaling #stoppwalfang

While our work in Ukraine has been focused on providing emergency relief to animals suffering from the war, we also took and supported long-term measures to improve local animal welfare standards and share best practices for handling and rehabilitating wild animals. We helped our wildlife partners in Ukraine to enhance animal enclosures to accommodate more rescued animals and supplied proper transportation crates for wildlife. Our experts also trained our partners on the CITES permit process (which is important for cross-border translocations of captive wildlife) and enabled their access to new knowledge on best international practices by translating available educational materials into local language. IFAW hosted several in-person events and trainings and online webinars together with Save Wild, the Bat Rehabilitation Centre in Kharkiv, the Domazhyr Bear Sanctuary in Lviv and Wild Welfare. The collaboration also saw the launch of several free-to-download resources, each covering various practical animal welfare topics, all of which have been translated into Ukrainian. It takes an individual of immense character to be a wildlife ranger. These brave men and women protect wildlife from the front lines while simultaneously bridging gender gaps, establishing generationally sustainable revenue streams and creating systems to save critical populations. Across the globe, rangers are on the front lines of protecting the planet’s last remaining ecosystems and the wildlife they sustain. This #WorldRangerDay, we celebrate and support the incredible strength of rangers who work every day to protect animals and the wild places they call home. Learn more about how rangers are doing their part every day to combat climate change:

A remarkable transformation is underway in the Malawi-Zambia Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA). Thanks to climate-smart agriculture training supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, thousands of small-scale farmers are improving their livelihoods and food security. Over 5,300 farmers are now adept at cultivating legume crops that boost soil fertility rather than depleting it, and the benefits are tangible in their enhanced yields and incomes. This training is vital for farmers living between Kasungu and Lukusuzi in the crucial #RoomToRoam landscape, where IFAW combats illegal activities like tree-cutting, mining, and poaching. Through our partnership with GIZ, we're empowering communities living alongside wildlife to survive and thrive amidst the growing challenges of climate change. This initiative is a prime example of how we can achieve so much more together. Thank you, GIZ, for helping make this possible! 💙 Photo 1: Julia Gunther / © IFAW
