Democracy is about people. The work of building resilient democracies that fortify meaningful participation for all people extends beyond analysis and observation. At IFES, our staff and partners work with global and local leaders to advance anti-corruption, inclusion, and technology for democracy, as well as the integrity of elections. "Even when there is goodwill, tech companies and election management bodies are talking past each other. Or worse yet—they can't figure out who to talk to." -Matt Bailey, IFES's Senior Global Advisor for Cybersecurity and Information Integrity at the #AthensDemocracyForum This week, IFES traveled to Athens to present our Voluntary Election Integrity Guidelines for Technology Companies. In consultation with senior elections professionals from around the world and with support from major tech companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Google, IFES developed these guiding principles specifically designed to bridge the communication gap between elections officials and tech companies. With this framework, IFES lays out 11 applicable guidelines tech companies should adopt to build supportive rapport with elections managers in democracies large and small. Read more about IFES's framework and how tech companies can practice effective and localized support for election managers. https://lnkd.in/ds2xNjW7

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems Nepal Update 🎯 Last week was significant for us. Our six college partners completed piloting IFES’ flagship program, ‘Democracy: from Theory to Practice,’ after 17 weeks of implementation. 👏 Students implemented over 30 democracy projects, empowering first-time youth voters and their communities on electoral and democratic processes, in addition to attending interactive classroom lectures. 📣 Students also submitted petitions to the Election Commission and Pokhara Metropolitan City, advocating for greater inclusivity in the electoral system and improved accessibility for people with disabilities in local government offices. 🤝 The D:FTTP program aims to support the Election Commission’s goals of increasing first-time youth voter participation. 🙌 Thanks to all our partners and students! #DemocracyDelivers #ResilientDemocracy Pilot program partners: Lake City College and Research Centre, Central Campus For The Deaf Naxal,Kathmandu, Thames International College Kathmandu, Janamaitri Multiple Campusq, St. Xavier's College, Maitighar, King's College

In a recent event on “Elections under threat: Priorities for 2024, 2025, and beyond,” Katherine Ellena, vice president of programs at The International Foundation for Electoral Systems brought attention to a significant trend: “We should study [U turns of autocratization] further to see what we can understand about why we had those U-turns.” According to data from V-Dem Institute, over the past 30 years, 70% of autocratization cases have been overturned. Remarkably, 93% of these reversals resulted in democracies that were either more robust or at least comparable to their pre-autocratization levels. Understanding the drivers behind this shift is essential for guiding the future of democratic governance. 📽️ Catch the full discussion here: t.ly/Zxoj5
