No place on Earth is stationary, and the most powerful tool we have for measuring ongoing, large-scale tectonic motions is GPS. This poster shows tectonic motion measured by GPS stations in the Network of the Americas relative to the tectonically stable interior of the North American plate. "Space Geodesy for Environmental Monitoring" Global Navigation Satellite Systems (#GNSS) are pivotal for monitoring #NaturalHazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and severe weather events. Our comprehensive review explores the role of GNSS in geophysical applications, highlighting advancements like GNSS for earthquake early warning, tsunami detection, or the rising importance of low-cost GNSS technology and machine learning. The integration of GNSS with other sensors like #seismometers and #InSAR enhances capabilities, providing high-resolution and high-precision displacement data. Our review also covers GNSS radio occultation for atmospheric monitoring and offers resources for accessing GNSS data and software. 🛰 GNSS and terrestrial reference frames play critical roles in decision-making for #ClimateAction. 🌐 As sea level rise continues to impact communities such as those in the Pacific Community-SPC, GNSS-enabled access to a reliable and robust global geodetic reference frame will be essential. #GNSS #Geodesy #GeodesyEnabled #GNSSenabled #geodesy4impact #GNSS4impact #ITRF #GGRF #referenceframe International GNSS Service (IGS) GGOS - Global Geodetic Observing System
As I witnessed in Samoa, high and rising sea levels are already causing severe damage to people in coastal communities in the Pacific region and other small island developing countries. The world can no longer wait to take bold and resolute international #ClimateAction.
