A Pan-African, consumer-centric agri-business with roots in growing and making sugar and related products, sustainably

About us

Illovo Sugar Africa (Pty) Ltd (Illovo) is Africa’s largest sugar producer and has extensive agricultural operations in six southern African countries, manufacturing sugar from cane supplied by its own agricultural operations and independent. Being market-focussed and valued by its communities, Illovo’s primary customers of its sugar products are found primarily in the domestic markets where it operates and in neighbouring regional African countries, using an extensive network of distribution and logistics channels. The group also produces raw and refined sugar for its customers in the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA), including high quality, speciality sugars made in Malawi and Zambia. High-value products manufactured downstream of the sugar production process, including furfural and ethyl alcohol, are sold internationally into niche markets. Installed electricity generating capacity, fuelled by renewable resources, annually provides around 90% of the group’s energy requirements and where governed by commercial power supply agreements, exports electricity into national grids. The group is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF), a diversified international food, ingredients and retail group operating in 48 countries. Illovo has a proud history of significant contribution to local economies where it operates and its positive social impact across the region on rural communities is substantial. The group’s total economic impact, including direct, indirect and induced impacts, was estimated at R 23.8 billion in 2016/17. In order to be a successful company on the continent, the group strives to be an invested citizen of the countries where it operates and the region. Illovo’s focus therefore, is on creating an environment in which both the group’s businesses and its communities thrive in a mutually-beneficial manner.

Celebrating Excellence at the Annual Illovo Africa Awards! The final evening of our recent Leadership Conference was a 1964 themed gala dinner in recognition of Zambia Sugar's 60th anniversary, it was also our Annual Awards. This much anticipated event recognises and celebrates the great work across our businesses. This year in many of the categories it was difficult to select a winner as there were multiple strong contenders, evidence of excellence across all of our African businesses.   These awards aim to recognise great performance, consistent results, adherence to standard, delivery of excellence and a display of strong values-driven leadership across each of the core functions of our business. We introduced a new category this year, the Thriving Community Award, which recognises a particular project that delivers on positive and measurable impact both for the community and our business, is aligned to our strategy and the relevant national agenda and uses collaboration and partnerships to leverage benefits.    Congratulations to all of this year’s winners: Safety Excellence Award: Ubombo Sugar Limited Agricultural Performance Award: Zambia Sugar Plc   Factory Performance Award: Illovo Sugar South Africa - Sezela  Commercial Performance Award: Zambia Sugar Plc   Edward Namboya Finance Award: Illovo Sugar Malawi plc People and Performance Award: Ubombo Sugar Limited    Thriving Community Award: Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (Grower support)   CEO Award: Business Enablement team   Business of the Year Award: Zambia Sugar Plc  Each award was presented by the relevant functional director, along with CEO of ABF Sugar, Paul Kenward, as well as special guests from Associated British Foods.   Well done and congratulations to all of the winning teams, and to every individual who has contributed to these strong results. Together, we continue to drive success and foster a culture of excellence across our operations!

Our Africa Leadership Conference 2024, held last week at the stunning Ciela Resort in Lusaka, was an incredible experience! We brought together business leaders from across the ABF Sugar Division, including all of our African business units and leadership of the divisional centre, under the theme "Our Steps to Delivery." Through the conference program we focused on purposeful actions, ensuring each step is measurable and aligned with our collective vision. The message was clear; intentional leadership drives high performance and impactful outcomes. The conference provided clarity and direction and reinforced our commitment to excellence. With record performance delivered in the past year, the business is in a strong position to take on the new year.   The conference was hosted in Zambia as we recognize 60 years of Zambian independence and was an opportunity to proudly celebrate 60 years of Zambia Sugar Plc. Thank you to all of our teams for their engaged participation, and the team who planned and coordinated this great event. The conference was both meaningful and memorable and provided an opportunity for connection and relationship building across the Division. All of our leaders left inspired to take on the challenges ahead and to continue to lead with purpose.

Our sugar operations at both Nchalo and Dwangwa in Malawi have come to the aid of local Malawians who have been badly affected by drought, floods and cyclones over the past number of years, severely limiting their own subsistence farming operations to produce the food they need to survive. In one of several initiatives to help our neighbours, maize flour has been donated to assist around 16 000 people at Nchalo, together with the many thousands of people in the flood stricken region of Dwangwa, affected there in March by the floods. Illovo played a key role in rescuing people stranded in remote areas due to rising flood waters, providing medical care and launching awareness and preventative campaigns to contain the spread of water-borne diseases. We’re especially thankful to the government, aid agencies and medical relief teams in the country who have helped to supplement our efforts. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4cQu49y
