PPL Corporation announced today it has executed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for an award up to $72 million to help fund a groundbreaking carbon dioxide capture research and development project at the company’s natural gas combined-cycle generation facility in Louisville, Ky. In a changemaking move toward advancing sustainable low-carbon energy solutions, University of Kentucky Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering has recommended the establishment of the University of Kentucky Institute for Decarbonization and Energy Advancement (IDEA) to the Office of the Provost. This new college-level center is set to play a pivotal role in the development and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies aimed at achieving carbon-neutral and carbon-negative production. “To meet the demand for the future utility and manufactory, our team is working with PPL Corporation and a group of industrial partners to synchronize the reliable existing power generating fleet, intermittent renewable energy, hydrogen production, spent material management and minimalization into many grid-scale and microgrid ‘energy parks’ that could radically shape the world we live in,“ said Kunlei Liu, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director of IDEA. Recently, July 15-July 19, 2024, I had the opportunity to attend the International Conference on Energy and Environment (#ICEE_2024), Co-hosted by the University of Kentucky Institute for Decarbonization and Energy Advancement (UK IDEA), where I learned from #experts, #engineers, and #technicians who shared their insights and research. The panel discussions and presentations were incredibly enlightening, focusing on the future development and application prospects in the fields of energy and the environment, focusing on #CO2_Capture and #Emission, #CO2_Utilization/Conversion, #Biomass and Solid Waste Utilization, and #Hydrogen and #Energy_Storage. As part of this position, you will engage extensively with community stakeholders including government officials, educational institutions, businesses and individuals within Eastern Kentucky and Lexington communities about the UK IDEA clean environmental technologies. The communities may be expanded as additional projects are awarded. Your responsibilities will encompass in-depth research into these communities' social and environmental justice issues, as well as diversification efforts within these communities.
