  • What an incredible conference in Osaka! We wanted to move the dial with peer support in aviation and the 120 delegates from 20 different countries certainly did that. Presentations from industry experts and Regulators, along with breakout sessions and interactive workshops all combined to deliver what IPAAC is all about - sharing expertise and knowledge in order to drive up the quality and effectiveness of peer support programmes around the world. It was an intense three days, over half of which was devoted to discussion and debate in workshops and breakout sessions, and the output was significant. We are working through all the presentations in order to flatten them and put them on the website, so bear with us whilst this process happens. There will also be a position paper resulting from conference which will be sent to as many NAAs as we can access, and we are working on a document which we hope to take to the ICAO Assembly in 2025. We will be communicating more about these in due course, but in the meantime we are catching our breath after a brilliant conference with brilliant hosts in a brilliant country. The bar has indeed been set very high for the 2025 IPAAC conference in Montreal. Our amazing Head of Customer Relations Rose Sokolova has put together a short video which beautifully captures all the many elements that went into the 2024 Osaka conference. Enjoy the memories for those who attended, and put November 10-14th 2025 in your diaries for what promises to be an even bigger and better IPAAC conference. #peersupport #safety #MentalWellbeing #MentalPerformance

What a week it was at the IPAAC Conference! Reflecting on the experience, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the many people who made it such a success. There are far too many to thank in one post, and I could never do my feelings justice in mere words! I must, however, extend a special thank you to my CEO, Duncan Hammond, MD David Whiffin, and the entire OdiliaClark team. Your support and understanding have allowed me to dedicate significant time and focus to IPAAC, for which I’m deeply grateful. During the conference, I shared some important news about my journey with IPAAC. Over the last nine months, as plans for the new, expanded IPAAC took shape, it became clear to me that balancing my professional commitments and serving as CEO was no longer sustainable. While I have genuinely loved the role and the day-to-day responsibilities, I believe that stepping aside will serve IPAAC best moving forward, and allow others to step up. That said, I am thrilled to announce that our chair, Dave Fielding, has invited me to take on a new position as Director of Corporate Relations. In this capacity, I’ll be focused on industry partnerships, maintaining and growing corporate relationships, and driving strategic initiatives. I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity and look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks! CA Charlie Curreri, PhD, LPC William Hoffman, MD Quay Snyder Herwin Bongers

  • Very much looking forward to a comprehensive debrief from Herwin as to what happened in Rio. What is clear is that we have two organisations very much sharing the same vision of mental well-being & performance issues being woven into an operator’s SMS to improve flight safety. Herwin being ‘IPAAC’s man at IASS’ was indeed timely and we look forward to increasingly close co-operation with the FSF going forwards.

Another successful day in Osaka! Day 2 of the IPAAC conference focussed on interactive workshops, where delegates could choose from three different workshops in the morning and three in the afternoon. Primarily aimed at improving existing Peer Support Programmes through sharing of ideas and problems solved, the topics covered included how to market and promote a PSP, effective selection and training of Peers, and how Resilience fits into the Peer Support picture. A highlight was an open and sometimes extremely honest discussion between pilots and medical Regulators about the difficulties involved in getting pilots to trust their AME. Huge amounts of progress have been made today, and we are definitely moving the dial here. More tomorrow on the last day, where we will draw all the threads together and deliver tangible output from these extremely productive workshops and breakout sessions. #peersupport #safety #MentalWellbeingAndPerformance
