"Cities must make the healthy choice, the easy choice". What a powerful conversation, as part of The Centre for Conscious Design (CCD) Conscious Cities Festival 2025! Yesterday, our Executive Director, Giselle Sebag, MPH, LEED AP ND, joined an insightful discussion on "Spaces that Move (Us): Fostering Physical, Emotional, & Social Engagement in Public Spaces". During an inspiring opening talk, Giselle emphasized the urgent need to redesign #cities to promote #health #equity and social connection. Loneliness and disconnection are not inevitable — they are #design challenges that we can solve. By shaping our built environments intentionally, we can foster #social bonds, encourage physical activity, and enhance collective #wellbeing. Some takeways: - Our environments profoundly impact our health — many leading causes of disease are ultimately rooted in poor urban design. - Life expectancy can vary by up to 20 years depending on where you live. - Lack of social connection is as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. - Cities must make the healthy choice the easy choice — safe pavements, protected bike lanes, and accessible green spaces are essential for thriving neighborhoods and communities. Other panelists explored the role of social prescribing and nature-based solutions in bridging health and urban planning — like for instance the RECETAS PROJECT. They highlighted the essential role of intergenerational connections and social participation as key strategies to combat loneliness and its serious health effects. Thank you again to The Centre for Conscious Design (CCD), Ebru Baykal Uluoz and Luciana Brarda for inviting us and for hosting this important session! #UrbanHealth #HealthEquity

Amazing turnout at today’s webinar on "How Thriving Cities Define Our Health, Happiness, and Future"! From the impact of rapid urban growth to the power of well-designed public spaces, the discussion highlighted why #cities are more than just #infrastructure — they are complex environments that can either promote or hinder #health and wellbeing. Some key takeaways: - The number one predictor of life expectancy where you live. - Many public spaces remain underused due to poor #design, safety concerns, and lack of activation. - Thoughtful design interventions — like better lighting, seating, or food kiosks (as seen in Bryant Park in New York City) — can transform neglected spaces into thriving #community hubs. - Active #transportation (walking, cycling) isn’t just about exercise — it’s about integrating movement into our daily lives. - The biggest health-impacting decisions are often made outside the health sector. A huge thank you to our wonderful friend and mentor, Gil Penalosa, for hosting this brilliant session, and to our Executive Director, Giselle Sebag, MPH, LEED AP ND, for sharing such powerful insights on the ways that we can design healthier, more equitable cities. #UrbanHealth #Cities4Everyone
