About us
The Investor Alliance for Human Rights is a collective action platform for responsible investment that is grounded in respect for people's fundamental rights. We are a membership-based, non-profit initiative focusing on the investor responsibility to respect human rights, corporate engagements that drive responsible business conduct, and standard setting activities that push for robust business and human rights policies. Our membership is currently comprised of 150 institutional investors, including asset management firms, trade union funds, public pension funds, foundations, endowments, faith-based organizations, and family funds. Our members currently represent a total of US$3.5 trillion in assets under management and 16 countries. About ICCR The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) launched the Investor Alliance for Human Rights in 2018 to provide institutional investors with a dedicated platform to increase their capacity and impact in addressing human rights risks associated with business activities. Founded in 1971, ICCR is a coalition of shareholder organizations that engage corporations on social and environmental impacts. 🎉 Kicking off #PRIinPerson this week with two insightful side events! Principles for Responsible Investment invited Rights CoLab to lead a discussion on the Investor HREDD Precision Tools, and OMERS hosted a beta-test of our upcoming Stakeholder Engagement Guide. On Monday, Joanne Bauer introduced the HREDD Precision Tools initiative, heard from investors about how they have been managing HREDD in their stewardship and investing, and invited investors to explore the newest two tools: Certifications Red Flags (beta) and Responsible Contracting. Participants shared smart ideas to refine the beta version of Certifications Red Flags, and explained how they can use each tool. We’re grateful for their valuable input! On Tuesday, a group of investors and subject matter experts joined us at OMERS for the first look at the Stakeholder Engagement Guide prototype. Peter Webster of EIRIS Foundation, Rémi Fernandez of PRI, and Joanne Bauer and Silvana Zapata-Ramirez of Rights CoLab led discussions on assessing the quality of stakeholder engagement, trigger points for direct engagement with rights holders, and how the guide can be practically applied. Key takeaways included: 🔹 Not unlike companies, direct engagement with affected rights holders should be decided based on assessments of saliency and leverage. 🔹 Investors need better ways to prioritize risk levels across different engagements. 🔹 Assessments of financial materiality often begin with reputational and legal risk considerations. 🙌 Our thanks to everyone who participated in these events. Your feedback ensures these tools will be even more decision-useful, helping investors assess the quality of HREDD in their portfolios. 👏 Special thanks to Nabylah Abo dehman at PRI, Lila Han, CFA, CAIA at OMERS, and our partners EIRIS Foundation, ESG Inteligente | Consultoria em Direitos Humanos e Sustentabilidade, and PRI for collaborating on the Stakeholder Engagement Guide! Speaking at Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR)'s Fall Conference in New York was a humbling honor. The animating spirit of Bishop Desmond Tutu imbued a room full of shareholder activists who are fearlessly advocating for human rights in capital markets. In particular, I discussed Venture Capital, Worker Rights and Digital Technologies on a panel alongside Vonda Brunsting, Catherine Bracy, and Dr. Wilneida Negrón, and moderated by Anita Dorett of Investor Alliance for Human Rights. Big thank you to Nadira Narine and Gina Falada, for pulling together this salient conversation on #digitalrights!

Aditi Rukhaiyar from the Investor Alliance for Human Rights has issued a timely call to action for investors to align their ESG strategies with human rights principles. 👉 "Significant progress has been made in raising investor awareness about integrating human rights into ESG approaches. However, a more coherent and global response is urgently needed to ensure that investment practices effectively align with the UNGPs especially because the social impacts prioritized by ESG investors often occur globally." #bizhumanrights #esg #investment #humanrights https://lnkd.in/g8nfdN_z

A critical conversation facilitated by my colleague Dr. Liz Umlas, senior fellow at Croatan Institute, about the legacies of Union Carbide's #Bhopal disaster -- a liability that Dow now fully bears. Forty years on, families and communities in India continue to seek justice and reparation, in terms of both human rights remedies and environmental remediation. Please join the Investor Alliance for Human Rights on October 23rd for this important briefing for engaged social and environmental investors who still have a role to play in advancing this intergenerational demand for justice.
The Bhopal gas leak disaster in India remains one of the worst industrial catastrophes and corporate negligence cases in living memory. Liz Umlas, Senior Fellow at Croatan Institute, will be moderating a special #investor briefing hosted by Investor Alliance for Human Rights on "The Bhopal Disaster 40 Years On: Dow's and Investors' Role in Ensuring Remedy for Victims." Register here for the free event on October 23: https://lnkd.in/gK6_xGYn In March, Amnesty International released "Bhopal: 40 Years of Injustice," providing an update on the situation of Bhopal survivors and efforts to ensure Dow contributes to providing remedy for the human rights harms, which are now intergenerational, and remediating the ongoing environmental damage. Tune in for key learnings and recommendations from the report. Plus, investors will have the opportunity to hear directly from advocates working with Bhopal survivors.
