🩸 A new blood test was found to be 91% effective at diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease. Here's what you should know about it 👇 Published in JAMA, the new study involved over 1,200 patients currently undergoing cognitive evaluation for mild symptoms of dementia in Sweden. The blood test measured their levels of p-tau217 and amyloid beta, two biomarkers for #Alzheimers disease. While the new blood test marks a major advancement, it is not yet a replacement for the current diagnostic process for #dementia, which includes medical history, review of medications, neurologic exams, neuropsychological testing, and brain scans. As our Chief Medical Officer Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN explained in an interview with Health, "While the blood test could serve as a helpful tool in conjunction with other diagnostic methods, further research is needed to establish clear guidelines for its use and to determine its role in improving treatment outcomes." Learn more about the new #bloodtest in our latest blog post 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVqpt_Gu Read the full Health article about the research findings 👉 https://lnkd.in/gXbq6na5 If you are experiencing problems with memory or thinking, it is important to seek a thorough medical evaluation as early as possible. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can be crucial for planning and managing the condition. Isaac Health's clinicians are here to help you get the answers and support you need. We offer specialist diagnosis and treatment for individuals experiencing symptoms of dementia. 💡 A new study published in Neurology found that people with high levels of body fat (especially in the belly or arms) have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias – while greater muscle strength was associated with a decreased dementia risk. Why is this the case? Our Chief Medical Officer Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN weighed in on the research findings in an interview with Everyday Health. He noted that muscle strength is associated with better physical fitness and metabolic health, which supports better brain health and can lower dementia risk. On the contrary, belly fat and arm fat often have the opposite impact: they may be linked to different metabolic processes and vascular issues, which can result in increased inflammation and other health risks that can impact brain health. This week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Alzheimer's Association® International Conference (AAIC) 2024 in Philadelphia. Groundbreaking research and advancements in Alzheimer’s and dementia care were showcased each day. There are too many to cover all of them, but here are some key highlights: 🌟 New data from an open-label extension study demonstrated that Lecanemab continues to show efficacy in slowing Alzheimer’s disease progression even after three years of treatment with relative safety. This sustained effect suggests potential long-term benefits of #Lecanemab for patients with early Alzheimer’s disease. 🌟 Lomecel-B, an investigational cell therapy, showed positive results in slowing cognitive and functional decline in patients with mild Alzheimer’s. The therapy met its safety endpoints and demonstrated promising efficacy in preserving brain volume and reducing neuroinflammation. 🌟 The ALZ-101 vaccine presented encouraging data, highlighting its safety and the development of a specific humoral immune response. This could be a step forward in preventative treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. 🌟 Experts shared insights on the impact of blood tests for Alzheimer’s, which could revolutionize early diagnosis and has the potential to reduce clinic wait times by providing more accessible screening options. 🌟 Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide drug (GLP-1), appears to protect the brain from atrophy and slow cognitive decline. A Phase 2b trial led by Imperial College London demonstrated nearly 50% reduced brain shrinkage in critical areas and slower cognitive decline over a year compared to placebo. 🌟 New research indicates that consuming processed red meat may raise dementia risk. Replacing one serving of processed red meat daily with nuts or legumes can lower the risk by about 20%. This study involved over 130,000 participants in the Nurse’s Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. #AAIC2024 underscored the importance of continued research and collaboration in the fight against Alzheimer’s. I'm feeling inspired by the dedication of this community and optimistic about the future of dementia care and brain health. Let’s continue to support and advance these incredible efforts! 💙 #alzheimers #alzheimersresearch #dementia #brainhealth

Last week, our Chief Medical Officer Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN contributed his expertise to a discussion on CNN regarding new research published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) on anxiety and its impact on dementia risk. Notable findings from the study include a strong association between new onset anxiety and the risk of developing #dementia of any cause (Alzheimer’s disease, vascular disease, or other causes). Researchers also observed that unresolved anxiety can significantly increase one's risk of developing dementia. 🧠 In response to these findings, Dr. Salinas underscored the importance of addressing #anxiety early and consistently. Addressing anxiety is not only crucial for mental well-being but also for maintaining cognitive health as we age. Taking proactive steps to manage anxiety, when present, is especially important for brain health. Happy World Brain Day 🧠💙 Join us and the global community in celebrating World Brain Day 2024! This year's theme, #BrainHealth and Prevention, is especially close to our hearts. According to The Lancet's 2020 report on dementia prevention and care, 12 modifiable risk factors account for about 40% of worldwide dementia cases. These risk factors include education level, hypertension, hearing impairment, smoking, obesity, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, social isolation, excessive alcohol consumption, traumatic brain injury, and air pollution. Through proper intervention, these risk factors can be addressed, potentially delaying or even preventing the onset of #dementia. At Isaac Health, we're committed to spreading awareness about brain health. Here are a few helpful resources on how to take the best care of your brain: 1. Key habits that can reduce your dementia risk 👉 https://lnkd.in/emwzkN9a 2. How your microbiome might impact brain health 👉 https://lnkd.in/ezE9jc8N 3.
