#ArticleoftheWeek 🔬 Exciting new findings in International Society for Stem Cell Research! This recent study profiles human colonic epithelial #cells, revealing significant insights into cell differentiation and regeneration, especially in the context of ulcerative colitis (UC). Grzegorz Maciag et L. discovered unique inflammatory-associated cell states with high regenerative potential, driven by JAK/STAT signaling in their primary #organoids. These findings could pave the way for innovative therapies targeting epithelial regeneration in UC patients. Key reflections on #ISSCR2024 I wrapped up an incredible week at the ISSCR 2024 - the International Society for Stem Cell Research conference in #Hamburg not too long ago. It was inspiring to connect with leading scientists, researchers, and innovators from around the globe who are shaping the future of stem cell science and regenerative medicine. Cell therapies, organoid technology, disease modeling, high throughput target validation, cultivated meat, aging and genome engineering were the key topics. ISSCR also held discussion sessions on a new guidance document currently being written: Clinical Standards | Best Practices for the Development of PSC-Derived Cellular Therapies. I expect this document to be key to standardize practices across indications and jurisdiction and will demystify processes surrounding the development of PSC- based #celltherapies. ISSCR meetings used to be small, intimate and mostly academic when I first started going to it back in the late 2000s. It is fantastic to witness how the meeting has advanced and expanded to 4000 in attendance with several companies and organizations in early stage clinical trials. It was wonderful to connect and hear presentations on clinical updates from Bayer BlueRock Therapeutics The National Institutes of Health Vertex Pharmaceuticals HeartWorks. Great to see a big presence from Novo Nordisk as well. It gives me confidence that we as a collective community are going to solve the biggest medical challenges facing us. It was a special treat to meet old colleagues from 15+ years ago, Deepika Rajesh Tenneille Ludwig and many other alumni from University of Wisconsin-Madison and WiCell the place where all #hESC and #hiPSC work began, and the mother lode of talent in this space. Proud of these colleagues who are leaders in their respective organizations and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with #stemcells. #ISSCR2024 #StemCellResearch #celltherapies #RegenerativeMedicine #ScienceInnovation

Excited to have joined the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, where over 4000 scientists gathered to discuss the latest advances in Stem Cell Research. Notable topics included embryo models, embryogenesis, and organoids, which provide the foundation of our knowledge about health, aging, and disease. Specifically, Prof. Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla from #HelmholtzMunich gave an insightful talk on epigenetic principles and cellular reprogramming in early mammalian development. We are now focused on addressing new ethical challenges and staying updated on relevant regulatory changes, in line with our Merck Stem Cell- and Fertility Principles "https://lnkd.in/erqTx_bS" "https://lnkd.in/eX2iaswH" . Grateful for Maria-Elena´s support as a member of the Merck Ethics Advisory Panel, MEAP! #Merck #MEAP #10YMEAP #Bioethics
