Non-motorised transport (NMT) is an essential part of urban infrastructure development. ITDP has been working to improve last-mile access to the Western Corridor BRT in Cairo by ensuring key corridors leading to the BRT have adequate well-designed infrastructure. The design process critically evaluates land and street uses to provide short, direct routes and meet social needs like vending, shade, and rest areas, while also integrating traffic calming and pedestrian crossings. ITDP organised a two-day conference with the 6th of October Authority, the New Urban Communities Authority, Swedfund International and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to present and discuss the designs for the priority corridors.

At the Botswana Transport Summit, ITDP presented on the urgent need for cities to invest in compact, transit-oriented development to reduce car dependency and prevent congestion. For a rapidly growing city like Gaborone, ITDP recommends investing in NMT and high-capacity public transport to support sustainable urban mobility.
-
ITDP joined regional experts in a workshop organised by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Agora Verkehrswende to explore key actions for accelerating just mobility. Discussions focused on establishing financing for equitable transport, formalising public transport & using data to guide planning.

What can Kenya learn from the implementation of the TransMilenio BRT? ITDP facilitated discussions between Mr. Enrique Penalosa the former Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, and the State Department of Transport. Bogota has an extensive BRT network and is arguably the most efficient BRT system in the world. The city has also invested in quality footpaths and cycle tracks shifting its residents from private vehicle use.

🔇 Launch Announcement! We’re excited to launch the Sustainable Cities Through Transport: Optimising Urban Investments in Africa report at the #ATF2024 in Abidjan! The report, developed by ITDP and the African Development Bank Group, explores innovative pathways to create low-carbon, inclusive urban mobility across Africa. 🚶♀️🚴♂️🚍 The report shows how cities can reduce urban emissions by more than 5,000 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (Mt CO2e) by 2050 and unlock over $2 trillion in infrastructure savings by prioritising mass transit, investing in walking and cycling infrastructure, and advancing electrification strategies. https://shorturl.at/p6PCk

We are thrilled to participate in the #ATF2024 hosted by the African Development Bank Group! ITDP contributed to a panel on low-carbon mobility, where we emphasised the urgent need for cities to prioritise economically viable mass transit systems. We also underscored the importance of investing in walking, cycling, and public transport infrastructure, alongside transit-oriented development and electrification, to help cities achieve the Paris Agreement’s 1.5° C climate target. Together, we can create more sustainable and equitable cities! 🌍🚶♀️🚴♂️🚍
