Great work by Water & Wetland, a Jones Lake Management Partner tackling phragmites control with advanced tools and techniques! Their efforts are making a big impact in preserving the health of our wetlands.
Recently our team, led by Senior Aquatic Biologist, Colin Gosselin, conducted a thorough survey to confirm invasive phragmites and treatment areas at our client's property. Phragmites australis, an invasive reed common in New England wetlands, poses a serious threat to native ecosystems. Its rapid spread crowds out native plants, degrades habitats for wildlife, and alters the natural hydrology of wetlands. Controlling this invasive species is crucial to restoring balance to local ecosystems. For the treatment of invasive phragmites, a liquid herbicide was applied to the foliage using a Marsh Master amphibious UTV equipped with a spray tower, ensuring efficient application in hard-to-reach terrain. For areas the Marsh Master couldn’t reach, our biologists used backpack sprayers for precise, low-volume foliar applications. In low-density areas or spots near native plants, they carefully hand-wiped phragmites to avoid any non-target impact. 🌱 Thanks to dry conditions and lower water levels, site navigation was smooth. We’ll return in about 8 weeks to remove the dead phragmites. Stay tuned for updates!
