Does remote working take away our ability to connect with others? Dave Cairns shared his thoughts on the importance of unstructured, in-person conversations. There are plenty of amazing things that working remotely can help people achieve but what it can’t do is replace face to face interaction. I say what needs saying about the Future of Work/Living. I also help teams coordinate remote & in-office Kadences (pun intended, it’s where I work and what we do!).
Interested in what might lie beyond “hybrid working”? I caught up with my buddy Phil Kirschner to discuss the importance of following how companies are the “pointy edge of the spear” or at the front end of the adoption curve of new ways of working are behaving. Phil and I have mutual colleagues like Annie Dean, Allison Vendt, Matthew Folsom, MCR, Darren Murph, and many others, who are very worth following if you care about a more people-centric future of work. Check out Phil’s unique perspectives in this impromptu video we recorded at the end of the WorkSpaces conference, and let us know what you think!

We can talk about office amenities till we’re blue in the face… But there is NO office “amenity” more valuable than the choice to go there or not. Period. End. Of. Story… The office isn’t about a “flight to quality.” (“Tenants relocating to buildings that offer enticements like cafés, gyms, yoga studios, and meditation pods.”) And it’s not about a “flight to experience” either… (That’s just landlord/broker speak for flight to quality cuz they know it’s been debunked) The real questions we need to ask are more fundamental: Why do we gather in the first place? How do we support those who NEED a place to go? How does coming together TRULY help us understand our colleagues and the mission we are chasing together? Spoiler: Fancy office amenities don’t answer ANY of these questions… Just think about it for a moment… Is going to church about the amenities? Is going to a community town hall about the amenities? Is hanging out at your favourite dive bar about the amenities? We all know the answer… Was epic to join Tom Hitch on his podcast, Workplace 3000, which drops Monday. Stay tuned to my feed. 🤘
