As we reach the end of #WomenInConstructionWeek, we want to thank Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal Company owner and president Mary McNamara for her company’s work on habitats for the kangaroos, penguins, and stingrays. Mary’s company is also one of the sponsors of our llama habitat! Mary has worked in the industry since her twenties, and we asked her what she felt was the most unexpected aspect of owning a construction company: “You must be ready for anything to happen,” Mary explained. “You may come into the office with a specific idea or plan for your day. That can change the minute you walk in the door. You must always be prepared for what comes your way.” #WomensHistoryMonth

We were thrilled to welcome April Ramirez-Wiedner of Mark One Electric to the Zoo for #WomenInConstructionWeek! April is the assistant to Mark One President Rosana Privitera Biondo, and this Kansas City-based company has been instrumental in providing electrical services to Sobela Ocean Aquarium as well as sponsoring the llama habitat. We asked April (pictured with llama Epic) what advice she would give to women entering the field: "Develop confidence, empower other women, be true to yourself, and know that women can be successful in the construction industry." #WomensHistoryMonth

For our next #WomenInConstructionWeek feature, we want you to meet Mindy Rocha of CJ Industries, LLC! Her company not only has helped with updates to Elephant Expedition, it is also one of the sponsors of the llama habitat. Mindy (pictured with llama Piyama) originally was drawn to the construction profession through her dad and grandfather, who were pipe fitters by trade. She says that one of her favorite parts of owning a construction company is to provide jobs for people’s families. What advice would she give to other women wanting to join the field? “Do it! Don’t hesitate; it is so rewarding to know you are making a difference.” #WomensHistoryMonth

Let’s continue with #WomenInConstructionWeek by meeting Christina Gunter, an owner of Gunter Construction Company! Along with working on projects like our parking lot playground, Gunter Construction is also a sponsor of the llama habitat. In this photo, Christina can be seen with one of our llama residents, Snap. Christina says that she was drawn to the construction field through her parents, who worked in the industry and would eventually become her coworkers. We asked Christina what one of her favorite parts about owning Gunter Construction: “No day is the same. There is always a different obstacle to overcome and we get to physically see the fruits of our labor (a completed project)! I also like building playgrounds; playgrounds keep us young at heart and help our children develop.” Thank you to Gunter Construction for the beneficial work that has impacted the Zoo community! #WomensHistoryMonth
