About us

At kartoonEDU, we make short, fun videos for school systems to share with parents and their students to learn about what’s going on in the schools. Informed parents and students make a more engaged school community. Parents want schools to do the best for their children, and schools want to do the best for their students. Knowing the how and why of what schools do gives parents the context they need to understand what their children are doing at school. kartoonEDU is produced by Dave Kartunen, a national-award winning broadcast journalist who focused his entire career on better governance. The idea was conceived with Win Treese, an experienced software engineer, writer, and technical leader with a background in explaining complex topics in understandable terms. Both are parents with a deep love of public school systems. Win continues to provide technical, conceptual, and content advice. kartoonEDU was borne out of a shared desire to help parents know more about what’s going on in their children’s schools.

My closest friend, Andrea Holland, has been connecting me with extraordinary people throughout the past 20+ years.  In January of 2023, the extraordinary person happened to be Dave Kartunen, a national-award winning journalist and educator who believes public education is the greatest vehicle for mobility in civil society.  At the time, Dave introduced me to his start-up business model merging journalism and public education. kartoonEDU creates customized animations for public schools to increase and enhance school communications and has since grown to 48 school district partners. Like Dave, I am deeply invested in the power of public education. From the high school math and leadership classroom to the nonprofit education space, I have devoted my career to supporting students, educators, and administrators.  I am thrilled to join Dave and kartoonEDU and continue this important work. Below is just one example of the custom, flexible, proactive, and engaging animations we are creating for school districts.  Let me know if you are interested in learning more!

Tomorrow is the first day of school in Lebanon, N.H. and their school district wants drivers to remember that the most dangerous part of a student's day is at their bus stop. This video is a light—but compelling—reminder to drivers about the importance of driving safely around buses, but also highlights the incredible coordination that school transportation departments have to manage every day. Ask us how you can customize and license this video for your community. We can also create broadcast licenses if you wanted to take a PSA to the airwaves! #backtoschool #schoolpr #schoolbussafety #schoolsafety

This video makes money for schools! Every school district in America relies on the free and reduced lunch program not just to fill children's bellies, but to allocate key federal funds to their district. It's essential that households fill out this form every year. Here's a better way to get them to do it, designed by White Mountains Regional School District in New Hampshire! Many thanks to Marion Anastasia for her creativity and vision for making this kartoon a reality. Any school can relicense and customize this video to make it one-of-a-kind for their district at a price that's a fraction of video production. Ask us how! #schoollunch #schoolfunding #publicschools #titlei #schoolpr

Burlington Public Schools is live with their new informational series on the Fox Hill Elementary School Building project! The five pillars in this video each form separate, shorter clips for use on web and social, while the longer version will be shared at public events like informational sessions and town meetings. Many thanks to Superintendent Eric Conti, Steve Brown, MCPPO, CDT, and Donna DiNisco, who led this project through to completion—a wonderful team to work with! #schoolpr #schoolconstruction #msba

It's one of the first videos we produced, but Peabody Public Schools is readying a big rollout in the new school year of our anti-bullying video. Josh Vadala, Ed.D. had a clear plan for this communication: reduce concerns of young parents, get their concerns to the right places, and reinforce the core values they've been building into their student community. This communication also has a clear return on investment: reducing time and resources in the wrong places while getting parent communications to the right places. Even better if we're alleviating concerns before that happens! Peabody also has this video ready to go in Spanish and Portuguese... what is your district doing to prepare students and young families for the new school year? #schoolpr #communications #publiceducation #antibullying #upstanders

So pleased to share this first pillar in a series of videos explaining the MSBA process for the Killam School Building project currently underway in the Town of Reading, MA! Working with Dave Kartunen of kartoonEDU to bring forward these digestible, customizable videos has been an excellent experience. This media asset helps us engage with our residents and improve our outreach as we seek to share the project progress. It's time to start rolling out some of the initiatives our districts have planned for the 2024-25 school year! We're starting in Nashoba Regional School District, where Superintendent Kirk Downing, Finance Director Ross Mulkerin, and their indispensable Communications guru Bridget Hannigan have done extraordinary work improving budget transparency in their district. Three highlights of this effort: 1| *Durability*: we went to great lengths to produce three separate videos that would educate the community and never go stale. 2| *Flexibility*: Nashoba enjoyed an "originator discount" for coming up with these topics, but they're built in a way for any district to customize and license into their own, one-of-a-kind communication. 3| *Accessibility*: Nashoba's _Finance Operations Center_ page on their website is the gold standard into how to display a complex set of information and content into a strong, visual layout. No matter the topic, this is a fantastic way to layout information on school district websites: https://lnkd.in/ea5WNGFd

We are so excited to share this "Supercut" of SAU 21's Portrait of a Learner! This video is the first of a new offering we're creating for districts: a "content toolkit" that provides even more flexibility, durability, and accessibility to their visual communications. A special thank you David Hobbs for his vision and enthusiasm to be the first! Here's how it works: we create a universal look (SAU 21's beautiful look was already done!) and build a reservoir of diverse content for them to publish over time. In this case, we also dedicated a day to shoot these interviews with SAU21's wonderful students, which will yield a treasure trove of additional material to reinforce their strategic goals. Already, other districts are doing the same to build visual content toolkits around their strategic planning, recruiting, and wellness initiatives. Let's talk about how we can build yours! #schoolpr #visualcontent #schoolcommunications #k12education

Last week I attended Wilmington's Town Meeting to support Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand, who shared the progress of the Wildwood School building project in partnership with the MSBA and architects DORE + WHITTIER. In 2020, Wildwood was selected as one of only 15 projects out of 71 applicants by the MSBA, bringing significant grants for feasibility studies to explore various building scenarios and costs. With six elementary schools nearing the end of their lifespan, our team is working on opportunities to consolidate resources for more efficient facilities. Our team looks forward to continuing this partnership, aiming for project completion in 2028.
