We are proud to congratulate Dr. Errick L. Greene, superintendent of Jackson Public Schools, for being named a finalist for the prestigious 2024 Green-Garner Award, the highest national honor in urban education! Dr. Greene’s visionary leadership has driven significant improvements, including raising JPS’s accountability score by two letter grades and increasing graduation rates. His work has secured critical funding for facility upgrades and provided the largest pay raise in JPS history for teachers, cafeteria staff and maintenance workers. Rhea Williams-Bishop, our director of Mississippi and New Orleans programs, shared: “The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is incredibly proud of the remarkable achievements Jackson Public Schools has realized under Dr. Greene's visionary leadership. As a deeply invested partner in JPS, we are thrilled to witness the district’s continued success and transformation.” Join us in celebrating Dr. Greene for this well-deserved recognition! At WKKF, we believe in the power of community-led efforts to drive racial healing and equity. Across the country, initiatives are sprouting that are directly tackling deep-rooted racial inequities. From youth in Baltimore providing vital bike repair services to address transportation gaps, to a nurse in Connecticut reimagining maternal care for Black women, to Tampa’s city government enabling first-time homeownership in gentrifying areas — each project is dismantling systemic barriers in innovative ways. These initiatives demonstrate that lasting change begins at the local level, where conversations and collaboration open doors for progress. Joseph Williams, Deputy Managing Director of Word in Black, said it best: "You have enough people doing this over time, and you can change the world." We are excited to kick off a series that will spotlight these transformative efforts, in partnership with The GroundTruth Project , showcasing models of success that can inspire other communities. Join us as we continue to highlight these stories of racial healing and equity. Learn more: https://wkkf.co/fi8q

Mississippi is leading the charge in advancing maternal and infant health through breastfeeding, now ranking second in the U.S. for Baby-Friendly hospitals. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Center for Health Equity, Education, & Research's CHAMPS National program and Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere Inc., we’re transforming hospital practices to better support mothers and their babies. The CHAMPS National program, funded by the CDC, has enrolled 101 hospitals nationwide to promote breastfeeding and improve maternity practices. ROSE, in particular, is making strides in addressing racial disparities by normalizing breastfeeding in the Black community and offering peer lactation support. Together, these efforts are ensuring a healthier start for babies and a brighter future for families. https://wkkf.co/ah6q

The 2024 Early Childhood Workforce Index is here, with a state-by-state look at policies and conditions affecting the early care and education workforce. It finds that the median wage for early educators is just $13.07 per hour, placing them in the lowest 3% of earners across all occupations. Despite their critical role in child development, they struggle to make ends meet. With interactive maps, state-by-state data, and actionable policy recommendations, the Index fills a critical gap in understanding the workforce’s challenges. It also includes bright spots - how states used federal pandemic relief funding to support early educators and how some states continue to lead the way. Explore the Index and use it to advocate for fair compensation and lasting support for early educators in your state or local community! https://wkkf.co/mmhw Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, UC Berkeley

As we honor Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to highlight the inspiring work of Dr. Santos Ramos, Assistant Professor at Grand Valley State University, who conducted research on how Mexican culture has shaped Battle Creek, Michigan. Dr. Ramos’ community-driven research illuminates the stories of Mexican Americans who have been part of the Battle Creek community since the 1800s, contributing to industries like farming, engineering and medicine. His passion for preserving cultural heritage is personal, rooted in the legacy of his grandparents, who fought for farmworkers' rights and celebrated Mexican art and traditions. Today, Dr. Ramos is growing this legacy by supporting the Masa Center, a nonprofit dedicated to Mexican arts and culture, and collaborating with community leaders like Victoria Monique Fox-Ramon to inspire the next generation through traditional Mexican dance and shared history. We are proud to support Dr. Ramos' efforts to ensure that Mexican American history is celebrated and continues to thrive. Read more: https://wkkf.co/8vp2

WKKF stands in solidarity with our partner JULIAN as they celebrate a major victory in Lexington, Mississippi. After years of advocacy, investigations and community organizing led by JULIAN’s founder, Jill Collen Jefferson, the Department of Justice has released its findings from a civil rights investigation into the Lexington Police Department. For too long, residents of Lexington lived in fear of a system meant to protect them. This marks a step toward healing, accountability and restoring justice. We thank all the fearless advocates who fought for this. This win belongs to the resilient and brave people of Lexington. Everyone deserves to fully participate in their community without fear.
