About us

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Lambda Legal has been making the case for equality on behalf of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV throughout the United States for more than 35 years. Our strategy combines groundbreaking work in the courts with innovative education and public policy work to change the hearts and minds of the public — and to teach people how to make sure that LGBT civil rights are respected. Through our offices in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles, we average over 60 cases at any given time, tackling a range of issues including marriage, relationships and parenting; employment discrimination; HIV; health care; transgender rights; youth issues; and the battle for fair courts. Lambda Legal’s mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. We see our efforts as an integral part of the continuing struggle for civil rights in America.

We asked four Lambda Legal lawyers to reflect on the most significant cases that have shaped LGBTQ+ rights. They highlighted groundbreaking legal battles such as the fight against discrimination in Lawrence v. Texas, to marriage equality, to stopping discrimination against people living with HIV and transgender people. Each case stands as a powerful reminder of the progress we've made and the battles still to be fought. Curious to learn more about these landmark cases and the incredible impact of Lambda Legal’s work as we mark LGBTQ+ History Month? You’ve still got time to visit the Queer Justice exhibition, a collaboration with the American LGBTQ+ Museum, now in Dallas at Resource Center through October 7! You can walk through the exhibit and explore 50 years of Lambda Legal’s advocacy, legal battles, and its relentless pursuit of justice for all. #DidYouKnow that transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNGD) youth in foster care and out-of-home placements are uniquely vulnerable to transphobic discrimination and mistreatment? According to a survey conducted by the Trevor Project in 2021, 40% of transgender and nonbinary youth who have foster care experience have been kicked out, abandoned, or have run away due to mistreatment related to their gender identity, compared to only 14% of TNGD youth who had not been in foster care. TNGD youth are often overlooked in data about youth in government placement systems, which leads to a troubling lack of policy and laws that protect them from discrimination and provide for their unique needs like services to help their families understand and accept them. To help meet that need, we partnered with Unicorn Solutions, Children’s Rights, and the Center for the Study of Social Policy to create Safe Havens II. This report serves as a crucial roadmap for policymakers and allies, features data on current policy and challenges for TNGD youth in out-of-home placements, as well as videos from seven TGND youth advocates with lived experience in foster care and other out-of-home systems who share their recommendations for system improvement. You can read their stories and recommendations in Safe Havens II: We Must Affirm and Support Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Diverse Youth in Out-of-Home Systems ➡️ safehavensreport.org #SafeHavens #ProtectTransYouth #SystemAccountability #TransRights #EqualityForAll #LGBTQYouth #YouthAdvocacy #PolicyChange #LGBTQRights #LGBTQ #SocialJustice

A #BannedBooksWeek message from Percy Batista-Pedro, plaintiff in our lawsuit challenging SF 496, Iowa’s 'Don’t Say LGBTQ+' and book banning law. "This year, I read All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson, a profoundly honest and moving memoir. ... No adult has ever told me about their life in such a clear picture. ... George perfectly articulates how exhausting it can be to be a queer person. This book moved me, but its candor has been deemed too much for young people, and that is exactly why we need it." "Book bans do nothing but censor life for young people, leaving them unequipped and unprepared to traverse the real world. We must fight for every book to remain on our library shelves!" We'll continue to fight alongside students like Percy to block book bans and laws that promote censorship. What are some banned books that have inspired you? Let us know in the comments! #LGBTQ #LGBTQHistory #LGBTQYouth #DontSayLGBTQ #BannedBooks #ProtectLGBTQYouth

As we mark the end of #BiWeek, Lambda Legal's Nick Dowse recalls his journey of coming out as bisexual. One question seemed to follow him along the way: "Am I actually bi enough?" It was difficult for him to answer, given the few examples of media representation that he could turn to. "The fact is representation is visibility, and visibility is crucial. We need more bisexual visibility, and LGBTQ+ visibility as a whole," says Nick. "Because with more examples of people who identify as lesbian, gay, trans, queer, pansexual, or bisexual, kids won’t have to grow up with the same levels of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty as I did when I was just starting to discover new parts of myself. That is why Bisexual Awareness Week and Bisexual Visibility Day are so important." 📣 The Advocate covered our new report with our partners at Children's Rights, the Center for the Study of Social Policy, and Unicorn Solutions LLC on the ongoing challenges transgender and nonbinary youth face in out-of-home systems across the nation and the dearth of programs to safely prevent system involvement and promote youth acceptance by their families and communities. This is a call to action for all of us. We must continue to push for systemic change and build a future where every trans and nonbinary youth receives the acceptance and support they deserve.
