"Earlier this month, I was able to reconnect with a few of my favorite landscapes. At one point, I sat in quiet awe watching a mother moose and two nursing babies in the river (personal best moose sighting ever!). It’s experiences like this that feed the soul, and the trip reminded me in a visceral way just how important the work of land trusts is — for people and nature." Jennifer Miller Herzog, Alliance Interim CEO We can't believe it's already September. This year has been jam-packed! How do you stay connected to your mission and the outdoors? We hope you had some time to reconnect this Labor Day Weekend.

Through our partnership, the Alliance and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service have worked together to strengthen the Agricultural Land Easement Program. Part of our shared work has been to seek ways to expand entity certification. Certification became available as a streamlined path for partner participation in the ALE program through the 2008 Farm Bill. But by 2022, there were only 6 certified land trusts and 8 total certified entities. As of July 2024, there are 42 certified entities and counting. We recognized the most recently certified land trusts at the Easement Summit in Denver. Congratulations to Arizona Land and Water Trust Athens Land Trust, Inc. California Rangeland Trust, Iowa National Heritage Foundation, Land Conservancy of Adams County, The Montana Land Reliance, Nebraska Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy and the Trust for Public Land for achieving ACEP-ALE certification!

"At the Partnership of Rangeland Trusts, we recognize the immense value that tools like the Land Trust Alliance's Ecosystem Services Valuation Tool (ESVT) bring to land conservation efforts. By quantifying the economic benefits of ecosystem services, the ESVT enables land trusts and partners to articulate the full value of conservation projects in clear economic terms. This information can support funding strategies and also bolster advocacy for land conservation in public policy. Economic data derived from the ESVT provides compelling evidence that investing in conservation is not just an environmental necessity but also an economic imperative." Calling all conservation communications professionals! Elizabeth Ward, our Vice President of Communications, is inviting YOU to our Communicators' Network Luncheon at Rally: National Land Conservation Conference. This complimentary lunch offers an opportunity for land trust communicators to meet, review triumphs and challenges and spend time with a great group of people. This year, we’re excited to have FM3 Research and New Bridge Strategy join us to share the results of a recent survey that explores voters’ attitudes about private land conservation and includes recommendations for the most effective language for communicating about conservation easements. Conservation stewardship ensures perpetual protection of the conservation values of owned and protected land. Land trusts are at a critical juncture to adequately incorporate new and emerging stewardship strategies to address physical effects of changing conditions. 2023 was the hottest year on record. According to the White House, heat severity is a life-threatening issue for a third of the country. That's why they just released a national heat strategy to reduce heat-related impacts. For land trust stewardship staff and volunteers, the HeatRisk dashboard is a practical tool for evaluating daily risks. Check out the National Heat Strategy 2024-2030 in our Resource Center at https://lnkd.in/gBVENMfk

"Recently, more than 500 organizations and companies representing a diverse set of Farm Bill stakeholders sent a letter to congressional leaders urging passage of a bipartisan Farm Bill before the end of the year. Letter signers include the Partnership for Rangeland Trusts and the Land Trust Alliance, of which our organization, the Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust is a member. As Congress continues to deliberate on the bill itself and how to pay for it, it is crucial that it adequately fund the Farm Bill’s voluntary conservation programs." "These programs are the largest federal funding sources for private land conservation and create significant opportunities for land trusts like ours to protect high-priority farm and ranch lands, grasslands, wetlands and forests."
