If there was one thread knitting all of the conversations happening during #ClimateWeek2024, it was this – climate solutions need buyers, and climate tech developers need new types of investors. In this edition of The Cooler, Jonathan Shieber explores the idea that a solution isn’t a solution if no one buys it and how innovators and investors are approaching climate solutions as an economy. Last week, teammates Matt Calderone, Sarah Borton, Abby R., and Jonathan Shieber were on the ground at #ClimateWeekNYC to support our clients, learn about emerging technology, and meet with new innovators and investors gathered in the city. Highlights included:  ✨ Newlab's Annual New Climate Futures - a gathering of over 1,000 of the most innovative entrepreneurs, industry leaders, investors, and policymakers. It was incredibly inspiring to see the variety of new innovations showcased; everything from Thea Energy (fusion power) to TARFORM - Mobility of Tomorrow (electric motorcycles).  🎤 Climeworks hosting their #CarbonRemovalSummit, and co-founder and co-CEO Christoph Gebald being interviewed on stage by Ben Geman at Axios House. 🌎 Equatic.tech COO Edward Sanders being interviewed at The Plaza, A Fairmont Managed Hotel after being named a finalist for The Earthshot Prize. ✨Humble brag alert for our Uber Freight team✨ 🚛 Earlier this month, the Squad supported Deliver 2024 – Uber Freight’s flagship conference of the year that brings together industry leaders, logistics professionals, and technology innovators to discuss the future of freight and transportation. As one of our most integrated accounts, we were able to guide Uber Freight through multiple facets of the conference including PR, media, content, and social. It was an impactful experience thanks to our legendary on-site team including Rachel Shepheard, Shami Barooshian, and Josh Tammaro and our remote all-stars David Rocha, Stacee Collins, Jacob Hatfield, Sam Dils, Emily Kocis, and Bernice Chen. This team worked hard to secure coverage in key trade media like American Journal of Transportation, FreightWaves, Logistics Management Magazine, among others, and produced one of Uber Freight’s most viewed and engaged weeks of social media ever. It’s always incredible to see results of a long-standing partnership  like the one we share with Uber Freight, and we are so excited to have the opportunity to continue building impactful programs year after year. So congratulations team - we’re honored to see your work in action! 👏

Last week, our Business Development Director Jacqueline Hull was on the ground to help organize Startup Boston Week, an event geared towards connecting the Boston startup community. After months of planning, Jax was able to spend the week completely immersed in sessions geared towards startup founders, investors, and employees within the community. It’s so important to support the startup ecosystem, and we’re so thankful Jax had the opportunity to support the event and share her biggest takeaways. We’re already looking forward to next year! #SBW2025

That’s a wrap on #SBW2024! It was so rewarding to see this conference come to life after months of planning. There was a LOT to coordinate across five days: more than 100 sessions (from how to adopt AI, to developing a personal brand and everything in between), a startup crawl (where we visited Silicon Valley Bank, Sam Adams Brewery, and Venture Lane | Startup Hub), a career fair, professional headshots, a podcast recording stage, keynote from MA Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao, morning coffees, a pitch competition, book exchange, 1v1 expert coaching, and more. It took a talented, dedicated crew to pull it all off — congrats to Stephanie Roulic Dan Newman Lily Volper Emily Rogers and countless others. Volunteering with Startup Boston since January has given me a chance to dabble in event management & planning, put my love of organizing to work, design some swag—and meet smart, interesting people I wouldn’t have otherwise crossed paths with. Three simple learnings I’m walking away with: → Assume Plan A + B will go sideways, and have a Plan C → Prepare, but accept some things will be entirely out of your control → Genuine interest in other people’s experiences makes “networking” more natural Feeling exhausted, inspired, and excited for next year! 💫

Excited to welcome the amazing Jonathan Shieber to our team as a Senior Strategist. With over 20 years of storytelling expertise from his time at TechCrunch, Dow Jones, and more, Jon’s unique perspective is an excellent addition to our team at LaunchSquad. We’re excited to leverage his insight and expertise in deep tech and climate tech as we continue shaping the future-focused narratives of change-the-world companies. We’re thrilled to have you on the team, Jon, and we look forward to all the exciting developments to come!

Some #personalnews, y’all. After about twenty years writing stories about startup and innovation ecosystems in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York and Shanghai for Dow Jones, TechCrunch, and FootPrint Coalition, I’m putting my ten machines to work directly for the companies building businesses today that will enable a better tomorrow. I couldn’t be happier to be joining the phenomenal team at LaunchSquad to work with revolutionary companies like Climeworks, ICF, Equatic.tech, and the Carbon Removal Alliance who’re leveraging technology to turn the world into an abundance engine and turning back the clock on carbon emissions. Thanks to Matt Calderone, Maeghan Ouimet, Jason Mandell, Brett Weiner, and Stephanie Fryer for bringing me on board and to the whole ‘Squad for the work they’re doing. This promises to be the best team of climate and innovation storytellers in the business over here, so if you’re a startup or investment firm working on the good stuff (or you just want to get in touch) holler. We’d love to work with ya. #newjob

LaunchSquad embraces flexibility ✨ When we aren't collaborating in Zoom rooms and Slack huddles, we love scheduling time to be together in-person too. We recently hosted a couple of cohort gatherings and have more in the works in the fall. We call them Squad Gatherings 💫   So far this summer: Our Account Executives and Senior Account Executives convened in San Francisco where they participated in mock new business pitches, role-played pitching exclusive stories, saw the SF sights, and enjoyed their very first driverless Waymo ride (a 10/10 experience, apparently!) 🚗 In Chicago, our Account Coordinators and Account Associates met up for interactive workshops focused on speaking and awards programs and B2B storytelling, some competitive miniature golf ⛳ , a hint of celebrity gossip and a ton of food. We’re inspired by the vibrant energy, laughter, and appreciation shared by our incredible teammates during these times together. It makes all the difference for our connection, collaboration, and fun. Can't wait for more gatherings this fall! 🍁

Climate tech investment has cooled over the first half of 2024, as many investors take a “wait and see approach” with U.S. elections looming. Given the uncertain state of climate tech investment, The Cooler turned to reporter-turned-venture partner and climate tech storyteller Jonathan Shieber to discuss where things are heading, and the role of capital in financing the energy transition generally. Read more at the link below, and don't forget to subscribe to #TheCooler for more climate conversations delivered to your inbox.

In the latest edition of The Cooler, we reached out to local reporters from around the country to learn more about the key climate issues facing their communities, and how they approach covering those subjects. As climate change continues to impact communities across the U.S., journalists play a major role in communicating about climate to the public—whether it’s explaining nuanced policy or advising about how to manage climate impacts. Amanda Eggert, Cami Koons, Delaney Dryfoos, Elise Schmelzer, Joan Meiners and Teri Hayt provide insight into parts of the country that are actively on the battleground of the climate conversation and those coming around to recognize the issue’s importance.
