  • 🌲 Standing Strong Against the Palisades Tahoe Development 🌲 The Village at Palisades Tahoe development proposal has resurfaced, looking much the same as it did in 2014, 2016, and 2023. Unfortunately, the project’s potential traffic impacts on the Lake Tahoe Basin haven’t changed either—and neither has the League’s opposition. We’re not alone in our concerns. At a public meeting last weekend, nearly 300 people attended in person, with well over 100 more joining online. About 50 people voiced their opinions, with all but two opposing the project. After nearly 7 hours of discussion, the Olympic Valley Municipal Advisory Council voted not to support the project. They also sent a message to Placer County and the applicant that 1) the community is overwhelmingly against the plan, 2) the County and applicant are encouraged to evaluate a different reduced-size plan with a reduced-sized Mountain Activity Center, and 3) the community wants collaborative input. Learn more about why we stand firm against this development and what’s at stake for Tahoe’s future by reading our op-ed. #KeepTahoeBlue #LakeTahoe #EnvironmentalProtection #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityAction #PalisadesTahoe #SaveOurLake

  • Uniting to Protect Tahoe: Highlights from the 2024 Lake Tahoe Summit    Today, leaders, policymakers, environmental advocates and community members met for the 28th annual Lake Tahoe Summit, held at the beautiful Round Hill Pines beach in Zephyr Cove, NV. This year’s theme, “Connecting Tahoe: Investing in Transit, Trails, and Technology for the Future,” brought together voices with a shared commitment to preserving and enhancing the Tahoe Basin.    Key Highlights:   🎤 Keynote Speaker: U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of investing in sustainable transportation, clean energy, and cutting-edge technology to protect Tahoe for future generations. We were thrilled to hear about the nearly $8 million investment in hybrid buses to reduce congestion, noise, and pollution.    🤝 Bipartisan Collaboration: Lawmakers from both Nevada and California, including Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (NV), Sen, Jacky Rosen (NV), Rep. John Garamendi (CA), Rep. Kevin Kiley (CA), and Sen. Laphonza Butler (CA), underscored the importance of putting politics aside to focus on protecting this national treasure. Their united message was clear: safeguarding Lake Tahoe requires cooperation and action at every level. 🌿 Environmental Challenges: Experts, including Dr. Sudeep Chandra from the University of Nevada, Reno, highlighted the ongoing challenges of wildfire and aquatic invasive species. The impact of these factors on Tahoe’s ecosystem, especially concerning water clarity and algae growth, was a key topic of discussion.    Our Commitment: As the League to Save Lake Tahoe, we remain deeply committed to our mission to Keep Tahoe Blue. The discussions and insights at today’s summit reinforce the critical need for continued investment in innovative solutions and community action. We look forward to continuing to work alongside elected leaders and our Tahoe partners to ensure the Basin remains a pristine and cherished destination for future generations.    Together, we will Keep Tahoe Blue! 💙    #KeepTahoeBlue #LakeTahoeSummit #EnvironmentalStewardship #Sustainability #BipartisanAction #TransportationInnovation #WildfirePrevention #CommunityAction

  • 💧Did you know Lake Tahoe's clarity has declined by 3.7 feet in just one year? Here's what we're doing about it and how you can help.💧 The 2023 Lake Tahoe Clarity Report was recently released, revealing key insights and emphasizing the ongoing need for environmental stewardship. The report shows an average clarity of 68.2 feet for 2023, a slight decline from the 2022 reading of 71.9 feet. Key highlights: ❄️Winter vs. Summer Clarity☀️: Winter clarity saw the 10th highest reading on record, thanks to deep water mixing, while summer clarity experienced a decline, primarily due to increased particles from watershed runoff. 🔬Scientific Priorities: Future research will focus on the impact of zooplankton, phytoplankton, microplastics, and other smaller particles on lake clarity. 📣 Statement from Dr. Darcie Goodman Collins, CEO of the League to Save Lake Tahoe “Our recent clarity figures reflect ‘business as usual’ with normal fluctuations. However, the report highlights critical areas needing further study. Winter clarity improvements are encouraging, but summer declines due to warming climates and increased tourism demand our attention.” She adds, "If we lose the clear water of Tahoe, we lose everything we love about it. Let’s all do our part to Keep Tahoe Blue.” What Can You Do? 🚌 Alternative Transportation: Use options like Lake Link and TART Connect to reduce car pollution. 🍴Reduce Plastic Use: Avoid single-use plastics that often become trash in our environment. 💪 Volunteer: Join restoration events like the League's Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/gUDYNAwg. In the comments, share your favorite Lake Tahoe memory and tell us how you’re helping to Keep Tahoe Blue. #KeepTahoeBlue #LakeTahoe #EnvironmentalStewardship #Sustainability #CommunityAction #WaterQuality #ClarityReport #ClimateChange #Conservation

✨ Celebrating 11 Years of Impact: Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue ✨ Every year, thousands gather at Lake Tahoe to celebrate the Fourth of July, but high beach traffic can lead to significant littering. Since 2014, the League to Save Lake Tahoe has led the Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanup on July 5th to address this issue. Why It Matters:   🌊 Protecting Our Shores: Without intervention, litter left behind can pollute Lake Tahoe’s pristine waters. This annual cleanup helps prevent thousands of pounds of trash from entering the lake. 💪Community Effort: This year, a record 789 volunteers participated, demonstrating the power of community in preserving Tahoe’s natural beauty. Over the past 11 years, volunteers have removed more than 26,000 pounds of litter from Tahoe’s shores. Data-Driven Success:  📊 Trend Insights: Detailed data collected each year helps identify litter hot spots and inform management strategies. For instance, the Zephyr Shoals area saw a 97% reduction in litter in 2024 thanks to new beach management strategies under the Tahoe Blue Beaches program. 🔬 Science to Solutions: Our data-driven approach supports initiatives like local bans on single-use plastics and the use of beach-cleaning robots. These measures, combined with community efforts, ensure long-term protection for Lake Tahoe. How You Can Help:   🌟 Join a Tahoe Blue Crew: Protect your favorite Tahoe spots from pollution by forming or joining a cleanup crew. 🌟 Use Citizen Science Tahoe: Report litter, invasive species, or algal blooms using our web-based app. Your observations are vital for our research and conservation efforts. 🌟 Spread the Word: Promote responsible recreation and help minimize beach litter. 🌟 Support Our Work: Consider donating or following us on social media to stay updated on our Lake-saving initiatives.  Together, we can Keep Tahoe Blue for generations to come. 💙 See our data story map 🗺️ https://lnkd.in/gpZGJMNc #KeepTahoeBlue #BeachCleanup #LakeTahoe #EnvironmentalStewardship #CommunityEffort #Sustainability #DataDriven #Volunteerism

🚨Notice - Spill in Carnelian Bay🚨 Update from North Tahoe Public Utility District (NTPUD): At approximately 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18th, a private contractor working in Carnelian Bay struck the NTPUD main sewer export pipeline. Sewage from the pipeline overflowed into the nearby parking lot and did reach Lake Tahoe. Crews from the NTPUD were on the scene immediately, and the pipeline has been repaired. The area around Carnelian West Beach is closed until further notice and the NTPUD is working to clean and remediate the area. All local and water quality agencies have been notified and the NTPUD is working with authorities to sample and test the water quality. There is no risk to the public drinking water system. The League is staying in close contact with NTPUD and will keep you posted. Also, please check NTPUD.org for updates as they become available.
