📣 For #WorldEnvironmentDay, we're highlighting and celebrating some of the wonderful projects featured on the Kana directory that are helping to protect and restore our environment 📣 🌳 Bowshiel, developed by Forest Carbon Ltd, is an inspiring family-led project to restore an ancient oakwood in Southern Scotland. When the land was purchased, it was an over-grown, neglected former plantation of (mainly) non-native conifers. However, through years of hard work, the landowners and their children have felled non-native trees and cleared scrub to allow the ancient oakwood to re-colonise the valley. 🪨 UNDO's first UK enhanced rock weathering project encompasses a network of agricultural partners across Scotland and northern England. Enhanced rock weathering is a nature-based technology that permanently locks away CO₂ from the atmosphere. The geological process of weathering has happened for millions of years, where CO₂ from rainwater is locked up as a solid bicarbonate when it reacts with silicate rocks. UNDO accelerates this natural process by spreading crushed silicate rock with a high reactive surface area onto agricultural land, where plants and microbes in the soil speed up the weathering process. 🌾 ANGUS DAVIDSON has undertaken over 400 hectares of peatland restoration on the Fannich Estate, situated in Ross & Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands. The Allt a' Choire Mhoir project is the fourth phase of work on the estate, adjoining the third phase and creating a homogenous area of restored peatland. Peatland restoration projects reverse the damage caused by poor land management, drainage and harvesting, helping them to absorb rather than emit carbon emissions. 🦋 The Honeygar project, managed by Somerset Wildlife Trust, serves to restore habitats to support a wide range of wildlife in part of an interlinked network of internationally important wetlands, forming the Avalon Marshes area of Somerset’s Levels and Moors. This restoration work focuses on grazing marsh, wetlands and relic fen. You can learn more about these projects on the Kana Directory, linked in the comments ↩️📌 #NatureBasedSolutions #NbS #NaturalCapital #Carbon #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Environment

The waters of the River Findhorn begin high in remote, peat-covered uplands, characteristic of much of the Highlands of Scotland. These carbon rich and internationally important landscapes are, however, at a crucial turning point. For thousands of years, peatlands have been characterised as a system of accumulation; storing layer upon layer of plant organic matter. Over time, a huge carbon store has been retained. With erosion now greatly accelerating, this balance has shifted, ultimately leading to major carbon losses. Notice the dark colour of the River Findhorn, especially after high rain events - this is peat being lost out to the Moray Firth from the thousands of hectares of degraded peatlands. Restoration techniques are now being rolled out across the catchment to try and reverse this trend and, in turn, improve the habitats of our river and its watershed. From drain blocking and re-profiling, to herbivore impact reductions - the tide of peatland degradation is changing to a story of optimism and hope. Certainly on the Findhorn, however, we still have a long way to go. #findhornwatershed #riverfindhorn #naturerecovery #peat #peatland #peatrestoration

A win for nature!!! Recent attention in the media has put the spotlight on the dire state of our rivers; in England only 15% meet the criteria for ‘good’ ecological status and shockingly, none achieve ‘good’ status overall1. But there is hope, every year we are inspired by some of the best examples of river and catchment restoration showcased at the prestigious UK River Restoration Prize, awarded by UK River Restoration Centre (RRC). It’s five years since we launched the Trust’s flagship river restoration programme, Riverlands, in response to the growing nature and climate crises and we couldn’t be more excited to announce that this year two of our projects were selected as finalists at the 2024 awards. Our Cumbria Riverlands team scooped first prize in the catchment award alongside partner Ullswater Catchment Management CIC for their work restoring habitats around Ullswater2. To date, the collaboration has delivered 843 hectares of habitat restoration; initiatives covered over 13km of river restoration, 46 hectares of pond creation, over 16km of hedgerow creation, and significant restorations of wood pasture, peat, and wetlands. The works also included the ‘re-wiggling’ of Goldrill Beck which is often used as an exemplar. Riverlands Porlock Vale Streams project was a runner up, recognised for it’s pioneering and innovative approaches to both river restoration and land management aimed at restoring natural processes at a catchment scale. Work has created an extensive, connected ‘waterscape’ that is nature rich and resilient to extremes in climate, whilst also remaining productive. This included the UK’s first large scale main river restoration using the stage zero technique and species reintroductions with beaver and water vole. It’s fantastic to be recognised for the work we’ve been doing and huge thanks to our partners, funders, farmers and local communities; the work we’ve achieved demonstrates that together we can support natural rivers, thriving wildlife and resilient communities. A big congratulations to the other finalists and everyone involved. Call for Scotland to declare itself the world’s first rewilding nation. The Scottish Rewilding Alliance has launched a Rewilding Nation Charter, as despite its stunning and spectacular landscapes and seeming wildness, Scotland (along with the rest of the UK) is considered one of the most nature-depleted and ecological degraded parts of the world. Ranked 212 out of 240 countries for the state of its nature with 1 in 9 of its species at risk of extinction. Rewilding offers hope Rewilding offers a means to push back against this, helping stem this loss of life from the land by restoring resilient and life-rich ecosystems. However, at the present time, only around 2% of Scotland’s land area is committed to rewilding. In light of this, the Scottish Rewilding Alliance have launched a campaign to seek government commitment to declare Scotland the world’s first Rewilding Nation, committing to rewilding 30% of its land and sea, helping reverse #biodiversityloss while supporting a more sustainable future for the country. Not only would this shift help seed nature recovery, it would also help safeguard ecosystem services in the midst of a changing climate, while creating economic opportunities. #HopeintoAction Picture a more life rich and vibrant Scotland with a rich tapestry of woodlands, wetlands, peatlands and meadows, and coastlines enriched and buffered by oyster beds, seagrass beds and kelp forests. A more resilient landscape that supports local enterprises, empowers communities, and helps kindle a sense of kinship and connection with the natural world and all its wonders. You can support the campaign by signing the national charter here: https://lnkd.in/eWKu9Rd8 #rewilding #naturesrecovery #resilientlandscapes Image credit: craighunter from Pixabay

These rolling hills are part of Bromfields Road, a Greenfleet property located on Boon Wurrung Country in South Gippsland, Victoria. It is one of four Greenfleet owned properties that make up the Strzelecki Nature Link. Once established, these projects will form 3.5 kilometres of contiguous koala habitat. We began revegetating this 37-hectare property last year. Over 30 locally native species were planted at Bromfields Road to create a self-sustaining and resilient native ecosystem. This includes the Mountain Grey Gum (Eucalyptus globulus), which is favoured by Strzelecki Koalas, a species endemic to this region.🌳 The forest at Bromfields Road is legally protected for 100 years and over its lifetime, will remove over 86,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. This is the equivalent of what approximately 20,100 average cars emit on Australia’s roads in a single year. 🚗💨 To learn more about Greenfleet’s work at Bromfields Road, visit: https://lnkd.in/gwaBEjhH #GrowingHope #Koalas #NativeWildlife #ClimateAction #Biodiversity

It's an early and cold start in the January sunshine for our Project Officers this week. Our latest restoration site for the season kickstarting as I type. This site has a lot going on: 💧It's a really key one for water. Our work will help raise and stabilize the water table in the peat, slowing the flow of water (and aiming to reduce carbon runoff) into a crucial water body. 🌄It's a large landholding, we're working on over 200hecatres. 🔍The peat of the site is severely damaged due to cumulative impacts of tin streaming, peat cutting, drainage and overgrazing. 🧭There are really interesting and important historic, even Bronze Age features in the area. We'll be excluding from our works and using buffer zones. 🐾A lot of potential for wildlife on this site as we intend to use willow bundles and catchment woodland creation to diversify habitat, as well as stabilize the edges of eroding peat. 🌳There's also a lot of great work taking place in the catchment by #SWLakes for water, wildlife and local people. Today is World Environment Day, and this year’s theme is land restoration – our specialty! Restoration involves the recovery of species, ecosystems or landscapes that have been damaged or degraded. This process aims to re-establish habitat to allow wildlife communities to thrive once again – to put back what we’ve lost. At Greening Australia, we’ve been restoring landscapes for over 40 years and have rebuilt thousands of hectares of habitat to date. Our planting projects provide a multitude of benefits, including food and shelter for Australia’s unique wildlife, tackling salinity on farmland, preventing millions of tonnes of eroded soil from reaching waterways, cooling temperatures in urban areas, and much more. We can’t turn back time but we can restore forests, revive waterways and bring back soils. Will you be part of #GenerationRestoration? #WorldEnvironmentDay2024
