Research continues to uncover the connections between our nation's chronic pain epidemic and mental health crisis. In fact, adults living with chronic pain are approximately 5x more likely to have untreated symptoms of anxiety or depression compared to those not living with chronic pain. A University of Arizona Health Sciences study published in the journal PAIN notes that improving outcomes for people with chronic pain will include connecting more people to mental healthcare. This underscores the critical need to address the psychological aspects of pain as part of a whole-person approach. Contrary to what one might think, the improvement in health from a placebo isn't about tricking the brain into not feeling pain. Pain perception is largely a top-down process, in which higher-level brain regions combine sensory and emotional information to predict pain. Research by Botvinik-Nezer (2020) in Nature Portfolio used fMRI to study how the brain’s activity changes with placebo treatments. Advances in neuroplasticity show that belief in a placebo can significantly alter pain perception by activating neural pathways linked to value and motivation. Neuropathic pain is due to nerve damage. But this category does not explain a common form of chronic pain that persists even after an injury has fully healed and there is no evidence of neurological damage. This led the International Association for the Study of Pain to define a new category called nociplastic pain, meaning “able to be molded.” Although the cause of nociplastic is unclear, scientists think it involves changes in pain circuits in the spinal cord and brain. These changes result in the perception of pain even when no nerve injury exists. Lin Health harnesses this clinical understanding as part of our behavioral health approach, which helps the brain and nervous system reroute over-sensitized brain signals to ultimately break the pain cycle.
