Can Technology Improve Outcomes in Construction and Boost Your Satisfaction? When we started our business 7 years ago, we got this great advice from Ibrahim Odeh, PhD, MBA, Founding Director – GLCM Columbia University: "You have to associate your business with a technology!" Primavera P6 was an obvious initial candidate because it's such a smart tool, and we have been using it for years. However, coming from 20 years in construction management of large complex projects and troubleshooting, I had my doubts. I found 3 major flaws, not in P6, but in how its potential was underutilized on projects. These issues were global, seen in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, USA, and UK: #Stagnant_Schedules: Halfway through, the schedule became a repetitive part of the monthly report, documenting past events rather than planning ahead. Most of the team lost track of the schedule entirely. #Lack_of_Planner_Engagement: Planners often avoided project management meetings and didn't lead with the programme. Many preferred working with computers over dealing with the chaotic and emotional environment of construction meetings. #Poor_Scheduling_Practices: Schedules often missed critical activities, lacked explanatory notes, were poorly structured, and didn't assign responsibilities properly. I've seen my fair share of bad schedules. If we relied solely on P6, transforming the industry would have been an uphill battle. Changing people's nature is something we couldn't do. Most construction software is built with ideal conditions in mind, assuming projects run by the book... but they don't! More on that in coming posts... So, while P6 is crucial, it couldn't be the centerpiece of our tech journey. There's an inevitable dead end with that approach, known to anyone involved in construction arbitration. I hope this post resonates with those who have faced similar challenges in the industry.
