“I think my life was forever changed the first day I held my miracle and thought, we're going to make it through.” - Lauren, NICU mom Meet James, a recent graduate of the North – Maple Grove Hospital NICU who has defied the odds every step along the way after making an early arrival at 24 weeks, weighing just 1lb. 8oz. When Lauren learned her water broke at 23 weeks gestation on Memorial Day, she was determined to do everything possible to keep her baby in for as many days – or even hours – as it was safe to do so. After successfully making it another 9 days, the hospital team confirmed it was time for James to make his arrival. “I was so ready to advocate for my son - and it sounds crazy, but I didn't really have to advocate because I trusted everyone and what they were doing,” says Lauren. “The neonatologists, the nurses, the therapists, they are truthfully phenomenal. Even though it’s your baby, in the NICU they're in the hands of these amazing people. And I am forever grateful for all of them.” With support from providers including Dr. Mammel and Dr. Kern from Minnesota Neonatal Physicians, P.A., James graduated from the NICU 96 days after he was born (and still shy of his official due date), weighing nearly 8lbs - and is settling in at home with his mom, dad, and proud big sister.

Today, former NICU parents Cassie and Justin continued their beautiful tradition of giving back to North - Maple Grove Hospital with their daughter Emerson ❤️ Emerson, a graduate of our NICU, celebrates her birthday every year by delivering lunch to the staff and families in the unit to share their ongoing appreciation for the incredible care and support they received while in-patient.
