A few weeks ago MHP (Massachusetts Housing Partnership) celebrated 25,000+ ONE Mortgages. I was honored to receive a “Helping Us Grow” recognition for the role Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance (MAHA) played (and still plays) in creation and expansion of this seminal 1st time/1st gen buyer program. 🏠Many thanks to my colleagues at MHP, MAHA and City of Boston for the collaboration and partnership. A shout out to all of the participating banks over the years who have turned this “one-time” program into a sustainable model of how to narrow the racial homeownership gap, many of them Partnership for Financial Equity members.

The Partnership for Financial Equity and the Woodstock Institute released their annual report on mortgage lending in Massachusetts. The report found that in 2022 the share of mortgages issued to Black and Latine homebuyers kept pace but disparities across the state remain. As Tom Callahan, former MAHA Executive Director, put it -- this represents true progress but "it does not mean we are anywhere close to closing this enormous racial homeownership gap." In 2022, homeownership programs benefitted from an influx of Covid-era funding and this report shows how those programs helped Black and Latine homebuyers keep up in the market even with higher home prices. But as Andrew Brinker points out in the article, "that money is running out, and there’s relatively little money in the multi-billion-dollar housing bond bill now moving through the Legislature to support homeownership programs." It's time for MAHA’s Monday Staff Meeting to introduce our new team members! This week we’re highlighting Ava Atkinson, Lottery Agent Manager. Ava joined MAHA as the Lottery Agent Manager in May 2024. She graduated from Northeastern University with a BS in Business Management. Before joining MAHA, she worked for Beth Israel Lahey Health as an administrator and also worked part-time as a real estate agent with a local agency, where she helped clients navigate the increasingly difficult housing market. Ava is excited to start this new chapter, where she will help low to moderate-income homeowners realize their dream of homeownership. What are you excited to do at MAHA? I am excited to lead the Lottery Agency at MAHA. MAHA has over 30 years of leadership in supporting first-time homebuyers and I am excited about the possibility of contributing to MAHA's success. ✏ What’s something you’re really proud of ? I completed my degree while working full-time and raising my children and graduated with honors. ✏ What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to travel and garden.
