About us

Mayo Clinic has expanded and changed in many ways, but our values remain true to the vision of our founders. Our primary value – The needs of the patient come first – guides our plans and decisions as we create the future of health care. Join us and you'll find a culture of teamwork, professionalism and mutual respect, and most importantly, a life-changing career. Mayo Clinic was founded in Rochester, Minnesota by brothers Dr. William James Mayo and Dr. Charles Horace Mayo. More than 100 years later, their vision continues to evolve around a single guiding value: "The needs of the patient come first." Today we are the largest integrated, not for-profit medical group practice in the world. We are recognized for high-quality patient care more than any other academic medical center in the nation. These endorsements are very gratifying, but also humbling. They remind us of the tradition that has been entrusted to each one of us, and the legacy of excellence that we uphold every day.

Mayo Clinic announces a groundbreaking achievement in organ transplantation, offering hope to thousands who have lost their ability to speak, swallow and breathe on their own due to diminished function or loss of their larynx. A multidisciplinary team of doctors in Arizona performed the third known total larynx transplant in the U.S. The case also marks a medical milestone as the first known total larynx transplant performed as part of a clinical trial and the first on a patient with active cancer in the U.S. "The surgery and patient's progress have exceeded our expectations," says David Lott, M.D., chair of the Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) - Head and Neck Surgery/Audiology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. "This is a tremendous accomplishment in launching what we believe is the future for laryngeal transplantation." A paper by Dr. Lott on the case was published July 9 in the peer-reviewed medical journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Learn more: https://mayocl.in/3WcfUdU

Preeclampsia occurs in 1 in 25 pregnancies and can negatively affect the health of women long after childbirth. Scientists link these effects to faster cellular aging in the body, called cellular senescence. Right now, there are no therapies to treat senescence in women with preeclampsia. However, Mayo researchers recently found three biomarkers in women with a history of preeclampsia that, one day, could lead to the development of targeted treatments. The researchers say finding a cure for preeclampsia would, "Improve the lives of countless women and their families and transform society in ways we can't even imagine." Sonja Suvakov, M.D., Ph.D., and Vesna Garovic, M.D., Ph.D., were the lead researchers of this study. Learn more: https://mayocl.in/3XQYDZb
