When AI governance is guided by a shared vision for humanity, it can be developed and deployed in service of our values. On Monday, October 7, PJMF President Vilas Dhar will be a featured speaker at the NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors) Summit, challenging us to consider ethics in guiding AI governance. This vision requires a shift in thinking, one that prioritizes human well-being and ensures that AI serves as a force for good. For a global transition to net-zero, companies across industries and geographies must act to reduce their Scope 3 emissions. But even as tools proliferate for companies to account for those emissions, the underlying data lacks the standardization and transparency necessary to enable coordinated action at scale. The Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT), an initiative of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, is closing this gap. More than 2,500 companies are already using PACT’s open standards and tools for tracking and sharing the carbon footprint of over 4,500 products. Please join us on Wednesday, October 16 at 12 PM EST for an enlightening discussion between Naama Avni Kadosh, the Director of PACT, and Nick Cain, the Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. They will discuss PACT’s unique approach to data partnership and coalition building that is helping to both improve transparency around carbon emissions and empower stakeholders across the globe to comply with net-zero targets, as well as the role of philanthropy in supporting collaboration and innovation across sectors for a more sustainable future. #DataStandards #DataSharing #DataTrasnparency

“We’ve done the work to demonstrate why AI requires cross-border regulation; how AI is being experienced by people is not constrained by boundaries or nation-states. We need a new consensus, multilateral approach to building this digital future.” The reach of AI is global – but how can we make sure our governance is? In an interview with POLITICO, Vilas Dhar, President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation addresses an urgent need: multilateral regulation of AI. Hear directly from Vilas on his vision for global governance of AI, the fundamental changes it will bring to how we relate to technology, and why AI should be provided as a public service in POLITICO’S latest five questions → https://lnkd.in/g8sPyWGR #TechForGood #AI Derek Robertson

We face an urgent need for AI governance frameworks that prioritize our human rights – and building a future where AI empowers communities requires responsible development and collaborative action. One starting point is equipping countries around the world, especially those in the Global Majority, with tools and processes that can accelerate an AI stocktake and support the creation of national AI policies - as we do in our partnership with the visionary team at UNESCO, led by Gabriela Ramos building the Readiness Assessment Methodology. PJMF President Vilas Dhar joined ministers and policymakers from across South and Central America at the Second Ministerial and High-Level Authorities Summit on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), sharing his expertise on the involvement of diverse stakeholders in AI governance — including not only policymakers, but businesses and civil society as a whole. This summit, hosted by AGESIC, UNESCO, and CAF, is a critical step towards realizing this vision of responsible AI governance – ensuring it empowers individuals and communities in the ways they need. This week, I had the pleasure of speaking in the Closing Plenary of the Philanthropy Forward ‘24 Conference organized by Philanthropy Ohio. We explored topics related to the evolution of #philanthropy, opportunities and impacts of #artificialintelligence, and pioneering ideas or ‘hunches’ that will propel our sector into the future. At The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, we are fortunate to work at the forefront of this evolution, learning from and with our partners who are constantly generating new ideas for how #ai and #datasolutions can contribute to a more equitable, thriving, and sustainable tomorrow. A few takeaways from the discussion: 💡To improve #equity and #justice in grantmaking, philanthropy needs to listen more, build trust, and hold ourselves accountable to not only our nonprofit partners, but also the communities we serve. 💡Integrating AI into philanthropy is about more than just improving operational efficiencies. Foundations need to build human-centered strategies and ethical frameworks for leveraging AI in support of community needs, stepping up as not just consumers, but architects of an AI-driven world. 💡The #arts and #humanities have just as much a place in our future as technical skills. Let’s continue encouraging our students to engage with the disciplines that reconnect us with our creativity, wonder, dreams, and shared humanity. 💡Even small ideas or ‘hunches’ have the potential to change the world, but only if they are shared. Philanthropy can play a key role in amplifying the ideas that communities generate, nurturing them into a plan, and translating that plan into action. A sincere thank you to the organizers of the conference and brilliant co-panelists, Lori Melichar, Ph.D at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), Valerie Goode at the San Francisco Foundation, and Carter Stewart at the Mellon Foundation for their fascinating insights! #ai #artificialintelligence #philanthropy #future #arts #humanities #equity #justice #aiforgood
