Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an annual international initiative that educates the public sector, private sector, and the general public about the importance of strong cybersecurity. Stay tuned. Throughout the month, the Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT) will share best practices and resources to help you stay safe at work and at home. We will also share how the Office of Security Management within DoIT keeps our State secure. In a fast-changing world, strong cybersecurity is more important than ever.   • Come join the MDFiRST team as a system support specialist! Maryland FiRST, Maryland’s public safety radio system, provides mission-critical voice communications to over 31,000 Maryland first responders. Maryland FiRST is interoperable and accessible by most first responders in and around Maryland. This position supports the day-to-day operations of MD FiRST, as well as MD FiRST project duties, in support of the implementation and administration of the MD FiRST radio system. This position is directly responsible for overseeing the MD FiRST Help Desk, providing timely support to MD FiRST operational customers by creating and routing troubleshooting tickets/correspondence and responding to customer inquiries. The responsibilities of this position include working efficiently while ensuring the MD FiRST customers have an engaging and satisfying customer experience. The position will also be responsible for the tracking of project procurement deliverables, maintaining tracking and financial documents, and other duties as assigned.   • Hannah Stasik is a Security Operations Center (SOC) Analyst at the Department of Information Technology (DoIT). Originally an intern at DoIT, she is now a Maryland Air National Guard Member on the Marland SOC team, where she monitors and protects Maryland networks against malicious activity or network traffic. “I haven't been working for DoIT for very long, but I am ecstatic to be back here defending the State against threats.” says Stasik. “My favorite part of this role is just being able to help users resolve any security concerns they may have and helping them build better cyber security habits for the future.”

  • Cyber Tip - Use Multiple, Strong Passwords Using weak, predictable, repeated passwords gives threat actors and scammers an easy avenue to breach personal and state systems. Use unique and complex passwords for each account to enhance your online security at work and at home. Passwords should be: Long– use at least twelve (12) characters that include at least three (3) of the following: At least one (1) English upper-case character (A-Z) At least one (1) English lower-case character (a-z) At least one (1) number based on 10 available digits At least one (1) non-alphanumeric/special character (ex.,!, $, #) Random—use of mixed-case letters, numbers, and special or a passphrase of 4 –7 random words.
