MEDS Smart destinations

The MEDS project participants have presented their proposals to policymakers, focusing on advancing smarter and more sustainable tourism practices. This manifesto aims to inspire and guide policymakers, stakeholders, and communities in fostering sustainable and smart tourism practices. By addressing environmental, cultural, and economic challenges, the manifesto outlines actionable strategies to create tourism models that preserve destinations, empower local communities, and ensure long-term prosperity. It serves as a call to action for everyone involved in tourism to collaborate to build a future where travel enriches people and the planet. Together, we can act as ambassadors of smart tourism, inspiring others to adopt climate action strategies and financial incentives that drive change.  We can create tourism models that celebrate and sustain local heritage and ecosystems by prioritising cultural preservation and encouraging stakeholder collaboration.  By fostering public-private partnerships and engaging with local communities, we can collectively promote renewable energy adoption, waste management, and circular economy principles in tourism.  Let’s make tourism a catalyst for sustainable development and a source of pride for local communities, transforming each destination into a model of innovation and environmental stewardship. This manifesto is the result of a collaborative effort, created by gathering valuable insights and input from all participants of the MEDS Academy. Their diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise have shaped the recommendations outlined here, ensuring they reflect the real challenges and opportunities faced across destinations. Today, the MEDS development project for smart destinations concludes its work in Matera, Italy. At the conference, the initiatives developed during the project are being presented, along with discussions on recommendations for policymakers on how to promote smarter and more sustainable tourism. For inspiration, Matevž Straus from Arctur d.o.o. ASSET Basilicata, a partner of the Erasmus+ MEDS project, presented the project's main results at the seminar "Toward a Smart Tourism—The post-COVID Era between Big Data and AI" held in Matera on September 30.
