Our Vision
Melwood advocates for and empowers individuals of differing abilities to transform their own lives through unique opportunities to work and play in the community. Melwood's vision is a world where people with differing abilities are fully included. Our organization was founded on a vision of inclusion for ALL people regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender or intellect. We all have abilities, we are all differently-abled.

Melwood was founded in 1963 when a small group of parents and community supporters decided to teach plant care to young adults who were considered by most to be untrainable, and unemployable. Their goal was almost unheard of: jobs for people with disabilities. It was a bold idea for its time. Today, Melwood offers job training, employment, life skill improvement. community support and recreation opportunities to more than 2,000 people each year in the DC metropolitan area.
Learn about our Business ServicesDisabilities vs Differing Abilities
In 2013, Melwood adopted a corporate philosophy that called for the organization to formally remove the prefix “dis” from the term disability. We felt that the term, defined as a limitation in the ability to pursue an occupation because of a physical or mental impairment, was an inadequate or limiting “label” for a cross section of people. We now refer to all of the people we serve as persons with “differing abilities” which is a much more accurate portrayal of their capabilities.
