First satellite launched by an independent NGO. Our mission: Measuring methane emissions to protect our climate.
About us
MethaneSAT is the most advanced methane tracker in space. By end of 2024, it will measure emissions almost anywhere on Earth with greater precision than any other satellite - from large leaks to sources too small for other satellites to see. Its initial mission is to quantify methane coming from the global oil & gas industry. MethaneSAT data will be free and publicly available to catalyze faster action by countries and companies to fix problems faster and more effectively. With high precision measurement capabilities and a wide view path, MethaneSAT will track not only the rate at which methane is being emitted and from where, but how those emissions are changing – making it easier to prioritize solutions for maximum benefit. It will quantify emission rates from the global level on down to sites as small as one kilometer.

🛰 MethaneSAT: Engineer in Focus 🛰 Thank you Mahima Seth for taking the time to share with us such wonderful insights about working on the MethaneSAT mission! Mahima is an operations engineer on the MethaneSAT team at Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute. 🌏 Operations Engineer “As an operations engineer at Te Pūnaha Ātea Auckland Space Institute, it will be my job to look after MethaneSAT for the remainder of the mission. This will include commanding and controlling MethaneSAT in orbit, contributing to all work that needs to happen on the ground to ensure successful operations, and much more. It is a bit of a stretch, but the idea of commanding a satellite that is in orbit makes me feel like a “ground astronaut”! It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to take part in MethaneSAT operations at such a pivotal point in my career.” 🇳🇿 MethaneSAT and New Zealand “For New Zealand, MethaneSAT signifies our commitment to contributing to global scientific advancement and combating #climatechange. MethaneSAT also presents some unique opportunities to showcase our capabilities to the world and to the people of New Zealand.” 🚀 Rocket Science “Part of my role is to inspire more people to join the space sector. I love challenging myself to create those “aha! I relate to that” moments for everyone that I meet and work with. I think those moments go a long way in breaking down notions that science especially space science is too hard. Yes, it is rocket science, but with the right ‘Guidance, Navigation and (some) Control’ we can understand it.” 🌟 Fun Fact! MethaneSAT is approximately the size of a household washing machine! This week at #NYCClimateWeek and across the 🌎, the demand for #methane data that can drive real progress is increasing. Satellite data is critical for new accountability initiatives like the International Energy Agency (IEA)-International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO-Environmental Defense Fund grading scheme announced earlier this week 🔍 In the lead-up to #COP29, the #methane momentum is building 👇 https://lnkd.in/dpED_BCe

Data update: We have added oil and gas infrastructure data to our methane map on Google Earth Engine (GEE) engine 🗺️ You can filter the O&G facilities by category and status while overlaying it with emissions data from our MethaneAIR campaign 🔎 Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gifZch-u

Commitments to #CutMethane only matter if we can turn #PledgesIntoProgress. Today, International Energy Agency (IEA), International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO and Environmental Defense Fund announced a new set of metrics to measure progress against companies' methane commitments. 📈 The initiative will provide estimates and data to assess progress and examine industry efforts to monitor emissions, drawing on existing measurement-based transparency initiatives as well as new measurement systems, including MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper's Tanager satellites. 🚨 Methane is over 80 times more powerful than CO2 in the short term, driving 30% of today’s global warming. But here’s the thing—while CO2 defines how much the planet warms, methane defines how fast it happens. 💡 Methane is a short-lived gas, so cutting it now acts like an emergency brake on climate change! #ad Environmental Defense Fund With new tech like satellites and better data, we can track and cut methane emissions faster than ever. 🚀
