United States and Australia collaboration. Integrated air and missile defence capabilities for Australia. 🇦🇺🇺🇸

About us

Integrated air and missile defence capabilities for Australia. Established to support the Commonwealth Government’s initiation of the Sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise, in collaboration with the AUKUS Forum, the Missile Industries Corporation (MissileCorp) champions the cause by forging robust collaborations. Our industry networks span the width and breadth of Australia and around the world, ranging from state governments, esteemed academic institutions, nimble Australian Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), to major Australian and international corporate giants. Our Mission: To bring together Australian missile industry and local capabilities to support the proficient design, manufacture, test, sustainment, training, storage, and disposal activities of cutting-edge guided weapons and explosive ordnance, helping to ensure that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) always has the upper hand. Our Vision: To build collaboration across Australian industry in the support of a Sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Enterprise that stands as a beacon of efficiency, resilience, and swift responsiveness to the dynamic needs of the Australian Defence Force, while fostering an acceleration in homegrown capabilities. On 5 April 2022, a significant stride was made with the Australian Government's official onboarding of Raytheon Australia and Lockheed Martin Australia as foundational strategic allies in the ambitious GWEO Enterprise endeavour. A key recommendation of the Defence Strategic Review is to accelerate and expand weapons systems, including land-based maritime strike and long-range missile launchers – to be complemented by investments to replenish weapons and explosive ordnance stocks and to establish in-country missile and munition manufacturing facilities in Australia.

Jericho Disruptive Innovation (JDI) continues to develop prototype capabilities for Head of Air Force Capability (HAC) to demonstrate options to solve gaps, risk and issues and take opportunities. A part of this remit includes the testing of developmental systems in a safe and risk managed way, and in this context JDI has raised Project ‘CAMEL TRAIN’. Improving the Australian Defence Force’s ability to operate from Australia’s northern approaches is a key priority outlined by the National Defence Strategy (NDS) for the future integrated force and this will be the primary focus for CAMEL TRAIN. The logistics supply chain within Australia’s northern approaches needs fundamental modernisation and novel solutions to meet the strategic objective of responding with credible military force. A resilient and robust logistics supply chain management system is required to enable commanders to fight, sustain and win in Australia’s northern approaches. CAMEL TRAIN will deliver a suite of air vehicles integrated into an autonomous Air Logistics Support (ALS) system. The CAMEL TRAIN system will strengthen the supply chain and offer a solution for rapid resupply of smaller stores to meet unforeseen urgent demands. The ability to rapidly resupply spokes from a logistic hub without straining personnel or larger airframes would significantly enhance the capacity and efficiency of the existing air logistics system. CAMEL TRAIN will eventually encompass a family of vehicles, ranging from short distance (50km) rotor variants capable of precision delivery up to 50kg, to longer range (1000km) fixed wing variants capable of transporting 1000kg. Larger variants will allow for optional crewing. Support at sea as well as land is planned, with at least some variants to be able to support maritime units by air drop or amphibious landings in waters up to Sea State 2. The system is to have a proven detect and avoid (DAA) function for flight control to operate in Class G airspace due to the prevalence of multiple users in that class of airspace. It is also recognised that using a type certified airframe for initial testing mayspeed introduction into active service. CAMEL TRAIN will be implemented in phases. This Request for Proposal (RFP) will define the scope of development services required for Phase 1 and will underpin subsequent procurement stages. • From an Australian perspective, there remain questions over whether Australia can train up enough submariners, technicians and engineers to crew and maintain nuclear-powered submarines, build the infrastructure required and establish a robust nuclear safety and regulatory regime. Vice Admiral Mead confirmed that if Australia fell behind in meeting a series of preconditions, delivery of submarines from the US would be delayed but it would not lead to a collapse of the #AUKUS deal.

Drawing a sharp contrast to the boosterism or appeals to patriotism usually seen from government and defence figures when the ambitious nature of AUKUS is questioned, Vice Admiral Mead acknowledged the project may not go smoothly. However, he said long lead times – for example 14 years to build the first submarine – and a budget contingency of 50 per cent in the $368 billion AUKUS price tag to cover cost overruns gave him comfort. “We have to be prepared for setbacks. We have to be prepared for contingency plans,” he said. “We think we’ve made a good balance on achievable dates targets. It is high risk but we have built in contingency along the way.” https://lnkd.in/gVNzZewb

Earlier this month, the aviation world was rocked with the revelation that the SM-6 air defense missile, previously used to arm warships, had made its way to arm Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters. The result was suddenly the world’s longest-range air-to-air missile, outdistancing its Russian and Chinese counterparts by a wide margin. The missile’s success will likely lead to other pairings that take advantage of America’s deep arsenal of high-tech weapons. The SM-6, developed for Navy warships, has a range of about 275 miles. That’s three times greater than the publicly stated range of AMRAAM, the U.S. Military’s current long range missile. China’s longest range air-to-air missile, the PL-15 (“Thunderbolt-15”) has a range of about 186 miles. https://lnkd.in/gHCQXab5

In a surprise move, the former White House security adviser will join the “formidable team” announced Tuesday to lead Britain’s Strategic Defense Review. Her appointment is the latest indication that the newly elected Labour government is keen to make inroads with Republicans ahead of the increasingly likely prospect of a Trump victory in the U.S. election in November. A British-born Russia expert, Hill served as a national security adviser to the former president for two years until 2019. The daughter of a coal miner from the northeast of England, Hill moved to the U.S. to study her post-graduate degree in Russian at Harvard and later worked as an intelligence analyst under both the Bush and Obama administrations before being hired to work for Trump. Since leaving the White House, she has continued to be an influential voice on Vladimir Putin's Russia, last year telling POLITICO that the war in Ukraine is a "proxy war against the United States." https://lnkd.in/gATbsQnF

  • NATO has signed a nearly $700 million contract to have member countries produce more Stinger missiles, one of many steps the alliance is pressing at its summit in Washington to get each country to boost its own weapons production capabilities. “This is not about shifts or a bottleneck. It’s building new factories,” said Morten Brandtzaeg, the chief executive officer of Nammo, a Norway-based ammunition firm. “If you want to fight a war for a long time, you need to have an industry behind you, that has the capacity for a long time,” Brandtzaeg said. National security adviser Jake Sullivan told Tuesday's gathering that for the first time ever, the NATO countries will each pledge to make plans to strengthen their own industrial defense capacity. He said this would help the alliance “prioritize production of the most vital defense equipment we would need in the event of a conflict." https://lnkd.in/gAEhUaKT

Establishing New Industries with #AUKUS AUKUS Forum Chief Executive Michael Sharpe shares the latest insights. 🇦🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸 Missile Manufacturing Industry: Australia currently lacks a domestic missile manufacturing industry, but the strategic imperative to develop this capability is clear. A key recommendation of the Defence Strategic Review is to accelerate and expand weapons systems, including land-based maritime strike and long-range missile capabilities. This expansion will be complemented by investments to replenish weapons and explosive ordnance stocks and establish in-country missile and munition manufacturing facilities. In the next two decades, Defence projects an investment of around AUD $100 billion in guided weapons. This substantial investment underscores the importance of developing a robust domestic missile manufacturing capability. Given the challenges in global supply chains and the shifting geopolitical landscape, enhancing domestic production of guided weapons is crucial for ensuring national security and strategic autonomy. • In a first for any US administration, Dr Campbell told The Australian that China was actively seeking to establish a military base in the South Pacific.

Australia, the US and other allied nations must increase their defence budgets and military preparedness because of the “enormous peril” of the times we live in and China’s increased strategic co-operation with Russia, Iran and North Korea, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell has warned. Dr Campbell delivered this striking assessment of Australia’s standing in the US: “There is no country held in as high regard as Australia. In recent years, Australia has been elevated to the absolute summit. Because of the Indo-Pacific, that is only going to grow over time. “We’ve just now, with the help of Australia, had the biggest uptick in investment in our submarine program since the Rickover navy (Admiral Hyman Rickover, father of the US nuclear navy, retired in 1982). We now better understand, through AUKUS, that we need to polish what is the jewel in our defence industrial effort, which is our (nuclear) submarine program.” The other striking challenge he nominated for the future of the alliance was the need to sell the alliance to young people who did not automatically understand the defining experiences of World War II and the period immediately after. https://lnkd.in/g34WUJB4
