The Missing Lynx Project

There is a constellation named Lynx – not because it looks like a lynx, but because you need the keen eyes of a lynx to spot it!   It forms a crooked line, close to the front of Ursa Major (which includes the much more easily seen Big Dipper/Plough).   Can you spot the lynx in the night sky?

Lynx kittens will often play with their siblings to develop their skills and social bonds. Play can involve wrestling, chasing, jumping and ‘hunting’ each other. If things get out of hand and a kitten becomes aggressive, mum will intervene.

Lynx have already been reintroduced to countries across Europe. In some regions, they’ve become part of the area’s identity, appearing on murals and merchandise.

The Missing Lynx exhibition is returning to southern Scotland! In the wild, lynx can live to be around 12-13 years old. The first year of a lynx’s life is often the toughest, with only half of the kittens from a litter surviving.

So good they named it twice! Did you know the scientific name of the Eurasian lynx is 'Lynx lynx'? It’s thought the word lynx may come from the word ‘leuk-’, meaning ‘light’ or ‘brightness’ – a reference to the lynx’s shining eyes and night vision.
