MATERNITY DONATIONS: Our award-winning #maternity department is holding a #baby item drive this Thursday, August 22! Stop by the MLK Community Hospital lobby, where our lovely maternity team will be accepting donations of new items like diapers, bottles, wipes and clothing. If enough of you donate, we'll be able to throw another community baby shower in the fall. This is especially beneficial for babies #BornAtMLKCH. Many new families don’t have the essentials they need for their babies. Your donations to our drive will help give them the support they need during this special time.

MEET THE MIDWIFE: Meet Angela Sojobi, one of our certified nurse #midwives at MLKCH. Angela was a precocious child who graduated from high school in Nigeria at just 14 years old. Her parents, recognizing her nurturing personality, encouraged a career in #nursing. "I was always tending to sick family and friends and animals," Angela recalled. "I fell in love with obstetrics and subsequently #midwifery." She graduated as a #midwife in 1983, was re-certified in America in 1994, and has been working in the LA area since then. When she heard about MLKCH and the community we serve, she felt a strong desire to be part of the team. "I want to ensure this hospital stays open forever and that we provide the highest quality of care to the community." Angela praises MLKCH's unique midwife-led #maternity model, in which #mothers receive hands-on support from a registered nurse-midwife as well as an #OBGYN. "It's really the best of both worlds," Angela said. "It the kind -of high-quality care I envisioned but that is not often available to communities like ours." Known for her attentiveness to her patients' wants and needs, Angela emphasizes the importance of communication. "I find that I learn a lot by speaking with my #patients and their support people. I also ask specifically how they want me to support them." Angela is a proud customer as well as caregiver—her grandchild was #BornAtMLKCH this year. Her experience is unparalleled. She used to keep a log book of all the babies that she delivered. "But I stopped logging after 5,000.” Learn about delivering your beautiful baby at MLKCH: mlkch.org/maternity #BornAtMLKCH #FacesOfMLKCH

BRINGING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER. “Like a band, we have each been honing our #skills, reflecting on our journey and preparing for our next big performance,” said MLKCH COO Jeff Stout during his opening remarks at our recent Leadership Development Institute (LDI). “Now it’s time to come together, synchronize our efforts and create something remarkable.” It was a day of thoughtful discussions, team-building and #networking activities for MLKCH #leaders, who gathered for our most recent leadership seminar. The theme for this seminar was “Bringing the Band Back Together.” Attendees were treated to an insightful #workshop facilitated by Laura Dewey, who provided useful tips on how to model effective #communication methods and empower our colleagues to engage with confidence in the #workplace. Seminars like the Leadership Development Institute demonstrate our commitment to professional development in our workforce and cultivating a compassionate executive team that cares about the health and longevity of the teams they build. Thank you to Courtney Stegall, HR Communications Manager, who did a wonderful job as the seminar’s emcee.
