We’re celebrating #WorldWildlifeDay by spotlighting some shy creatures—freshwater mussels! These aquatic all-stars provide valuable ecosystem services by filtering the water and being an indicator of healthy rivers and streams. When MnDOT comes across threatened or endangered mussel species that might be impacted by bridge projects, we relocate them to get them out of harm’s way. Our team collects the mussels from the riverbed, measures them, and keeps them submerged in a mesh bag in the river until we can move them into a suitable new home at the end of the day.
