Transforming Foster Care and Ending Youth Homelessness

About us

Our Mission To transform foster care and end youth homelessness. Working in partnership with young people who’ve lived through the systems we’re transforming, we change policies, perceptions, and practices that stand in between any young person and a safe, supportive, stable home. Our Vision Each and every young person, regardless of race and individual experience, reaches adulthood with an equitable opportunity to thrive. The Mockingbird Society works with young people and families to transform foster care and end youth homelessness. We think holistically, creatively, and passionately about meeting society's obligations to children and youth who need out-of-home care. Our advocacy is rooted in the direct experiences and voices of young people who have experienced foster care and youth homelessness. Our youth programs train young people who have experienced homelessness or in foster care to become their own best advocates. By doing so, they change policies and perceptions that stand in the way of every child having a safe and stable home. Our family programs advocate for innovation in the way foster care services are delivered. MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™ is a foster care model that provides children and families an extended-family network. The program is being implemented around the world, and has been proven to retain foster parents at much higher rates than traditional foster care. By creating supportive systems of care, youth thrive while developing lasting connections to support their successful transition to adulthood. Together, our solutions aim to transform the systems that impact the lives of thousands of children, youth and families in Washington state and beyond.

💙Youth Programs Fall Fundraiser Recap💙 Young peoples' voices, vision, and passions were central to this event. From the powerful words shared by Memphis, Amaiya, and Ender (Photo 1, 2, and 3) to the performance of original music by LKValentine and Mockingbird-inspired artwork by Ender featured on special macarons (photo 5), young people brought such beautiful energy and positivity to the entire event. Sierra Rogers, Mockingbird's Director of Youth Programs (4th photo), shared these words about our work and partnership with young people: "We want our young people to grow into their voices and power—to not only self-advocate, but advocate for those around them and use that advocacy to heal from the challenges they’ve faced... We want to stand alongside them to help them discover and harness their wisdom and talents... And we hope they will take these powerful learnings with them to their next adventure, job, or mission—whether it be in advocacy or human services, whether it be in Washington or across the globe, or following their dreams. And most importantly, we hope they will grow and thrive with a lasting belief in themselves and their own power to positively impact the world and those around them."

💜Public Policy & Advocacy Fall Fundraiser Recap💜 Charles Smith, Mockingbird's Public Policy & Advocacy Director, shared about how amplifying the voices of lived experience experts, engaging in partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, and utilizing key research and data within policy work are all key in creating lasting systems change. "The Mockingbird Society seeks to cultivate a transformative environment where the voices of vulnerable youth are not just heard, but are pivotal in shaping the policies that affect their lives. We envision a future where systemic change is not just an aspiration but a reality, driven by the wisdom and experiences of those who have lived it. In doing so, we create a legacy of advocacy that embodies the principles of solidarity, empowerment, and resilience." ~Charles Smith

I was having too much fun to remember to post yesterday, but shout out to The Mockingbird Society and their Block Party Fundraiser yesterday. The location, food, music, and vibe were on point, and the people were FANTASTIC. An awesome new way to raise friends and funds! Love this collaboration with our Coordinated Care partner. And join me as a donor!

🌟 Community in Action 🌟 HopSkipDrive had an incredible time sponsoring and participating in The Mockingbird Society Block Party last week! 🎉 It was inspiring to witness the powerful performances from youth advocates and connect with so many dedicated individuals working to make a difference in the lives of youth in foster care and beyond. Our HopSkipDrive team was proud to set up a table and share how our transportation solutions help remove barriers for youth, ensuring access to the support and services they need to thrive. 🚗💪 If you’re a community organization experiencing transportation challenges, let’s connect! Together, we can explore how transportation can support your mission and help the youth you serve. Huge thank you to The Mockingbird Society staff for organizing such an impactful event, and to the amazing advocates who shared their stories and performances. Your voices are vital, and we’re honored to be part of the movement for change. 🙌

Director of Youth Programs (The Mockingbird Society)

This year, The Mockingbird Society came together in community for our first annual Block Party Fall Fundraiser. And if you couldn't tell by these pictures - it was an incredible experience. I am so grateful for our TMS team and TMS participants for collectively coming together and making an event that staff and young people could only envision. On October 10th, we made it a reality. THANK YOU to all who were able to make it and support us. THANK YOU to all of the amazing talent and vendors. And a huge THANK YOU to those who believed in our fundraiser being community-centric. It was incredibly fun, engaging, and changed the perspective of many on how we need to lead. See you all at the next one! 👋
