Transforming Foster Care and Ending Youth Homelessness

About us

Our Mission To transform foster care and end youth homelessness. Working in partnership with young people who’ve lived through the systems we’re transforming, we change policies, perceptions, and practices that stand in between any young person and a safe, supportive, stable home. Our Vision Each and every young person, regardless of race and individual experience, reaches adulthood with an equitable opportunity to thrive. The Mockingbird Society works with young people and families to transform foster care and end youth homelessness. We think holistically, creatively, and passionately about meeting society's obligations to children and youth who need out-of-home care. Our advocacy is rooted in the direct experiences and voices of young people who have experienced foster care and youth homelessness. Our youth programs train young people who have experienced homelessness or in foster care to become their own best advocates. By doing so, they change policies and perceptions that stand in the way of every child having a safe and stable home. Our family programs advocate for innovation in the way foster care services are delivered. MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™ is a foster care model that provides children and families an extended-family network. The program is being implemented around the world, and has been proven to retain foster parents at much higher rates than traditional foster care. By creating supportive systems of care, youth thrive while developing lasting connections to support their successful transition to adulthood. Together, our solutions aim to transform the systems that impact the lives of thousands of children, youth and families in Washington state and beyond.

🌟Meet our third Fall Fundraiser: Block Party Edition honoree, Emiko Tajima!🌟 Emiko Tajima is a faculty member at the University of Washington School of Social Work . Her research is equity-driven, with a focus on system change to improve child, youth, and family well-being, especially for marginalized groups. Emiko directs Partners for Our Children (P4C) a research and policy advocacy center at the School of Social Work which is committed to anti-racist institutional and structural analysis and reform. Emiko’s systems change approach is shaped by her interdisciplinary education and direct service experience supporting survivors of family and gender-based violence. Emiko’s decades of service focusing on prevention and system change to improve the welfare of children and families (especially within marginalized groups) is deeply aligned with Mockingbird’s values. Case in point, her research, support, and steadfast belief in our young advocates helped make our recent win with SB 5908 Extended Foster Care possible! "We're honored to recognize Emiko for her dedication in delivering crucial data around extended foster care and her powerful testimony that has shaped legislative outcomes," said Charles Smith, our Public Policy & Advocacy Director. Last week, leaders from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including Deputy Secretary Andrea Palm, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Jeff Hild, and Administration for Children and Families Commissioner Rebecca Jones Gaston, joined us in Tacoma to learn about the policies and programs that have helped contribute to Washington’s historic 40 percent drop in youth and young adult homelessness. This remarkable progress—which was made possible through collaboration between government, nonprofit, and philanthropic partners, a focus on equitable outcomes, and leadership by young people themselves—means 10,000 fewer young people are experiencing housing instability today than there were in 2016. The group heard from Governor Jay Inslee, First Lady Trudi Inslee, representatives from the Office of Homeless Youth, YMCA of Greater Seattle Social Impact Center, The Coffee Oasis, Cocoon House, and young leaders from The Mockingbird Society. The panelists’ message was clear: We have proven that we can move the needle on youth and young adult homelessness and we must continue investing in the policies and programs that we know are working to keep young people safely and stably housed. We’re grateful to our federal partners for taking the time to learn about our progress and to all of our local partners for their commitment to this work. Onward!

🌟We're excited to introduce another Fall Fundraiser: Block Party Edition Honoree-- Representative Tina Orwall!🌟 Tina Orwall has represented the 33rd district since 2009. Tina has worked with all levels of government to help embrace best practices to better serve the community. Representative Orwall’s decades of service elevating issues around mental health, adoptee rights, protecting minors, and K-12 education, as well as her championing of MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™, have made a meaningful difference in Mockingbird’s ability to advance improvements in child welfare policy. "I'm excited about honoring Representative Orwall due to her impact in recognizing the outcomes of Foster parents and young people who are part of MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™ Constellations," said Jeff Abdullah, Director of MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™.
