About us

Momentum is a strategic design-build partner that takes a people-centric approach to helping credit unions and community banks thrive. The way we see it, a building cannot be successful unless it’s truly meeting the needs of the people who will use it. We start by fully understanding your business goals so we can design and build for your employees, your customers. We use powerful predictive data to zero in on how to best serve the people who live and work in your neighborhoods, and we help uncover the right technologies to connect your employees with colleagues and customers. We collaborate with you every step of the way using a unique integrated process and open communication style, so all stakeholders can move forward with confidence. Yesterday, we had an awesome experience participating on the panel at the Filene Research Institute's roadshow hosted by Community Financial Credit Union in Plymouth, Michigan. The event brought together industry leaders for insightful discussions on the future of the credit union industry. Special thanks to Filene's Joel Hartzler, CUDE, and Dr. Cheri Speier-Pero for their valuable contributions. Looking forward to the next roadshow on October 8 in the Philadelphia area! #creditunions #designbuild #innovation #future Mark Alguard Whitney Loe, SCMS

Never a dull moment at Elmhurst University! With students arriving back on campus this week, they’ll get to see firsthand what the project team has been up to during our “Summer vacation”. Soon after students left campus in May, excavation work began and the concrete foundation work for the new Health Sciences Building is now nearing completion. The ironworkers have been going full bore for the past 2 weeks and the structural steel skeleton is taking shape. The HSB as we fondly refer to the building, is more than just another academic building on the Elmhurst campus. The HSB represents the university’s long-standing commitment to advancing health sciences education, in providing educators and future healthcare professionals with a collaborative, interdisciplinary and immersive academic and clinical environment. As the steel rises, so does our anticipation of the incredible impact the HSB will have on the Bluejay community. We’ll keep you posted with more updates as we continue to make progress and remember, the future of health sciences at Elmhurst University is bright...and it’s Green too! We had a wonderful time at Unitus Community Credit Union's grand opening for their new Unitus Business Center (UBC)! This was a fun project to work on, especially working alongside Steven Stapp, Terie Ebert, and the rest of the Unitus team. Their vision for the UBC enabled us to design a true hybrid workplace for the post-pandemic era of work. The UBC seamlessly supports employee collaboration whether they are working at home or in a variety of locations throughout the office that support different activities. Every aspect of the workplace was designed to support employees in their work as well as their health and wellbeing. Unitus' sustainability efforts are also reflected in this building, which is was designed to reduce environmental impacts of the buildout and operation in every aspect and is pursuing LEED Certification. The property also features a 5-acre wetland that Unitus is committed to protecting. Mark Alguard Jenny Bengeult Robert W. Saunders, LEED AP Bryn Mader Caitlin Tallar Whitney Loe, SCMS

Momentum has launched a new website!   Over the past fifteen years we have leaned more and more heavily into researching the unique issues that credit unions face and publishing this research and stories of credit union successes in text, images, and video.   This new website allows us to not only better tell these stories, but also to better communicate our insights into industry issues and show the credit union industry who we are.   We invite you to check out the new momentumbuilds.com, and while you're here we recommend checking out the Insights page to learn more about issues facing the industry and our own research and solutions.   If you follow for our content but aren't familiar with what we do, you can check out our Branches and Workplace service pages. Or to learn how the sausage is made, check out Our Process. And of course no website tour would be complete without our portfolio under Our Work!

Environmental, social, and governance considerations are essential in the design and construction of our clients’ projects for several reasons. Our efforts ensure minimal environmental impact by reducing waste, conserving resources, and following sustainable guidelines such as LEED certification. Effectively applying these principles also leads to cost savings through energy efficiency and waste reduction. Programs that enhance community relations and improve employee satisfaction foster a positive organizational image, attracting prospective employees and user groups. For educational institutions, this includes demonstrating our values to prospective students and educators alike. Partnering with local suppliers and subcontractors who embrace fair labor practices and inclusivity, also helps share the investment that our clients make in their communities. Project management with a socially responsible framework promotes transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior, reducing the risk of legal conflicts and reputational damage. These benefits enhance an organization’s resilience, innovation, and competitiveness, attracting like-minded community members who prioritize sustainability and ethical practices. Our experience shows that well-planned programs lead to sustainable growth, improved financial performance, and a stronger organizational image, positioning our clients as leaders who engage in responsible business practices. I share these thoughts as I extend our appreciation to President Troy VanAken, the board, and the cabinet of Elmhurst University, particularly Kent Dahlgren, Chair of the Buildings and Grounds subcommittee, and Kurt Ashley, VP for Operations and Technology. Over the past six years, Kent and Kurt have challenged us to “think a little deeper” while managing a variety of complex projects for the university. They have emphasized demonstrating the positive impact of each project on students, faculty, staff, and the community, while ensuring that sound business decisions are aligned with the institution's core values. To further demonstrate their commitment to community, social responsibility, and stewardship, Elmhurst University has commissioned its largest renewable energy system to date. The 165kW system, comprising 300 rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels, will help power the new 48,000 SF Health Sciences Building, reducing its reliance on traditional energy resources by over 35%. The project is registered with the US Green Building Council, and the team is seeking LEED Gold Certification. Exploring sustainable design elements and renewable energy systems involved months of research and validation, with a focus on outcomes and adherence to core principles. I look forward to sharing more details about the process and building systems in future posts. Go Jays! Someone please ask this equipment operator to keep his day job! Wait, the operator in question is our friend Steven Stapp, President and CEO of Unitus Community Credit Union in Portland, Oregon, and the photo was taken at the recent groundbreaking of Unitus’ new branch and administrative center in Woodburn, Oregon. The groundbreaking marks the beginning the second phase of Unitus’ Distributed Administrative Network, and we have been proud partners with the credit union’s team since 2020, when we began the development and implementation their long-range, strategic workplace strategy. The credit union’s Distributed Administrative Network establishes multiple locations for employees to work, collaborate, and connect in flexible spaces across the region. The new branch and administrative center will be located at 2951 Stacy Allison Way in Woodburn, and this location fills a geographical gap for members and employees between Salem and planned facilities near Bridgeport Village. Unitus’ Woodburn facility is a 15,000 SF building with an expansive branch and community room on the first floor and includes drive-up services and Virtual Teller Machines (VTM). Staff will have access to administrative flex offices and conference rooms on the second floor and the third floor will be leased. The project is seeking LEED Gold certification, the industry’s leading green building and sustainable design certification program. This will also be the first Unitus facility to incorporate renewable energy production, in the form of rooftop solar (pv) panels, taking full advantage of the Department of Energy’s Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Credit (48C). “Woodburn is a great location for Unitus to plant roots with this new administrative center and branch,” said Steven Stapp, President and CEO of Unitus Community Credit Union. “The community is growing, and we know this new location will help us better serve our members in the area and allow us to welcome new members who can count on our inclusive financial products and services. We’ve been active in the community with partners like AWARE Food Bank for some time, and we look forward to expanding our support within the community.” Unitus announced the rollout of first phase of the Distributed Administrative Network in July 2022 with the purchase of an 89,000 SF facility on Durham Road in Tigard. That project was recently completed by Momentum and there will be a community celebration held at the site on 10 August 2024. The Distributed Administrative Network model will lower Unitus’ overall operational costs while adapting to the organization’s changing needs around workplace flexibility, collaborative spaces, higher levels of employee engagement and employee wellbeing. Many thanks to the staff, board and members of Unitus, for allowing us the opportunity to share in your growth and success! From one of our founding partners at Momentum: "Flashback to 2018...HAPO Community Credit Union’s award-winning Mill Plain Boulevard facility in Vancouver, WA. The outcome desired for this facility was to expand the offering of HAPO’s products and services to the Vancouver market. In doing so, HAPO’s management team acknowledged the importance of incorporating regional and environmental design elements, as a means to visually support and reinforce their strong commitment to improving the financial lives of their members in this new market. Momentum provided market research and location analysis in order to vett viable locations in the growth areas of the market, and local vendors and subcontractors were sourced and managed by Momentum’s design/build project team. Momentum has been partnering with HAPO since 2008, and we have delivered several LEED Certified (green buildings) branches for the Credit Union in various markets throughout eastern Washington. Additional research during the design phase of the Mill Plain project, directed HAPO towards escalating their focus on sustainability and community engagement, and the WELL Building Standard was selected as a means to help assist the Credit Union in improving their commitment to the health and wellness of their staff. I will proudly state that the Mill Plain facility is the first WELL Certified Credit Union facility in the world…yes, the world! This was no simple feat and the planning and implementation process required enormous commitment and focus by the HAPO team. But that’s HAPO in a nutshell…committed and focused, and we truly value the friendships that we have developed with the HAPO team over these past 16 years."
