Our staff care for some truly unusual animals, including the elephant fish that's part of our Into the Deep/En lo Profundo exhibit. You'll see them swimming with spider crabs and other deep-sea dwellers. Elephant fish are extraordinary both in the ocean’s depths and at the Aquarium. They belong to a group of cartilaginous fishes called chimaeras that branched off from their closest relatives nearly 400 million years ago. We're learning more about these distinctive deep-sea dwellers every time we work with them. Read more, then see if you can spot one on our streaming Spider Crab Cam. https://lnkd.in/gYTzBzm5 #elasmobranchs #chimaeras #GhostShark #MarineBiology #ichthyology #DeepSea

Our mission: to inspire conservation of the ocean
About us
The mission of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the ocean. Our diverse and dedicated team works in many ways to assure the future health of the ocean and the people who depend on a healthy ocean for their survival. Our living exhibits and visit programs are considered among the best in the world. We offer free education programs for more than 100,000 schoolchildren and educators each year -- and our new Bechtel Family Center for Ocean Education and Leadership is taking that work to a new level. Rigorous science underpins all of our work to advance policies that promote ocean health in the United States and internationally. Our respected Seafood Watch program is a global leader, giving businesses and consumers the tools to transform how fish are caught and farmed around the world. Our award-winning exhibits feature the rich diversity of marine life along California’s central coast -- from sea otters and kelp forests to jellyfish and sharks. Our newest exhibition, "Into the Deep / En lo Profundo," features never-before-see animals from the deep ocean. We attract nearly 2 million visitors a year and engage 3 million followers through our social media channels. Our education programs are shaping a new generation of science-literate ocean conservation leaders, and giving educators better tools for ecosystem-based learning. We promote science-based action on behalf of key species like sea otters, sharks, and Pacific bluefin tuna. We've advocated successfully to create marine protected areas, eliminate ocean plastic pollution, and end to the shark fin trade, and we support policies to address climate change and ocean acidification, which threaten ocean health, and our own survival.

Many thanks to Chancellor Cynthia Larive of the University of California, Santa Cruz for her generous remarks celebrating Executive Director Julie Packard when she received the UC Presidential Medal -- the highest honor given by the University of California system. University of California Office of the President #OceanConservation #MarineConservation #leadership #inspiration #OceanPolicy #MarineScience
Congratulations to UC Santa Cruz alumna, ocean scientist, and Monterey Bay Aquarium co-founder and Executive Director Julie Packard on being honored with the UC Presidential Medal, the system’s highest honor! Julie is the first UC Santa Cruz graduate to receive the medal, which was bestowed by UC President Dr. Michael Drake. It recognizes her tireless work to safeguard the world’s marine ecosystems, her longstanding commitment to UC Santa Cruz and the UC system, and for inspiring generations of students to study and protect oceans worldwide. Julie was also honored recently with a UC Santa Cruz Foundation Medal, which recognizes individuals of exceptionally distinguished achievement whose work exemplifies the vision and ideals of UC Santa Cruz. What Julie has done with the aquarium is absolutely remarkable, establishing it as a must-see destination while also making it a leader in ocean policy. Very few people have the vision, presence and talents to accomplish something like that. Her impact on ocean conservation has been enormous, and her affiliation with our campus brings me and so many in our community great pride. What well-deserved honors! #ucsc #montereybayaquarium #mbari #highimpactscience

Looking for a sustainable seafood option that’s a cinch to prepare, even on those hectic weeknights? Say hello to wild-caught Alaska flounder and sole, our July Super Green List addition. We recommend any species of Alaska flounder and sole either certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or rated green by Seafood Watch. Shaped like haphazard pancakes, flounder and sole are flatfishes. They carry both their eyes on one side of their head and lie flat on the seafloor, blending in seamlessly with the bottom habitats they call home. These fish, which include species like arrowtooth flounder, yellowfin sole, and flathead sole, are an important part of ocean food webs. Flounder and sole shine with nutritional benefits for humans, too. With over 12 grams per serving, Alaska flounder and sole are a great source of lean protein, essential for muscle repair and body strength. Flounder and sole have low saturated fat levels and good amounts of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which help protect against cardiovascular disease. They promote strong bones. Flounder and sole are good sources of phosphorus and vitamin D, important nutrients for maintaining strong bones and teeth. A serving provides 20 percent of your daily phosphorus needs and 14 percent of the Daily Value of vitamin D. They power healthy thyroid and metabolism. One serving of these Super Green List fish provide nearly half the Daily Value of selenium, an essential mineral that plays an important role in healthy thyroid and metabolism function. They boost vitamin B-12. You can meet nearly half of your daily B-12 needs with a serving of flounder or sole, supporting nerve function, DNA production, and red blood cell formation. Monterey's culture was shaped and enriched by people from many backgrounds. They each had their own connection to the ocean. It's time to tell the story of this overlooked part of our past so we can shape a healthy future for the ocean and everyone who depends on it. https://lnkd.in/g9XWrCFd #IndigenousWisdom #multicultural #diversity #stories #connection #MarineLife #fishing #seafood

It takes a team to keep our animals thriving and exhibits healthy—including the best wildlife veterinarians in the business. Our veterinary team doubled when we added Dr. Ri Chang (they/them) and the fantastic skills they bring to their work. Take a journey behind the scenes into a day in the life of Dr. Ri. From checking a turtle’s shell to peering down a shark’s throat—and beyond—they do it all! Their passion for their work shines through as they care for diverse species, advance marine research, and contribute to education—above and below the surface of the water. 💙 🩺🦈 https://lnkd.in/gcQf74Mp #veterinarian #VeterinaryMedicine #DVM #AnimalCare #OceanConservation #MarineWildlife #MarineLife UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Williams College California Veterinary Medical Association
