This week at the Montana Association of Dams and Canal Systems (MADCS) annual conference, Benjamin Cope will present on the Teton Dam failure. On June 5, 1976, the Teton Dam in Idaho tragically failed during the first reservoir filling, killing 11 people and causing catastrophic damage to the downstream communities. His presentation describes how and why the dam failed and depicts the devastation caused by the failure. Throughout the presentation, he will dive into the subsequent impacts on dam safety regulation and the critical lessons learned.

Great project team in a beautiful location! Thank you to all
Had a wonderful site visit with a couple of my coworkers for some important projects in Yosemite NP. (Yosemite Creek Lift Station and Headworks and Wahhoga Utilities Extension) Thanks to Sandman Structural Engineers and Tetratech (ME, EE, I&C) for teaming with us on YCLS, as well as Morrison Maierle (EE) for help on Wahhoga. The weather was beautiful but the views were just spectacular!

Located at an impressive elevation of 7,700 feet, the Mystic Lake Hydroelectric project at Rowe Dam presented the challenge of designing an intake gate that could be flown in by helicopter and assembled by hand—an example of how innovation can overcome even the most challenging conditions. Last week marked an exciting milestone as engineers from our Bozeman, Billings, and Helena offices collaborated on a unique inspection of the paving for the new access road leading to West Yellowstone Airport. Simultaneously, heated concrete was poured for the terminal sidewalk—a rare occurrence for concrete pumping over a paving operation, according to Andy Galen, PE, one of our airport engineers. Projects like these showcase how careful planning and innovation can work together. We’re proud to be part of this development that will serve travelers and locals alike!

Congratulations to Bradley Heimbigner for earning his PE license. Brad serves water/wastewater clients in the Billings area. Over the past four years, he has enjoyed working on various water and sewer rehabilitation projects for the City of Billings and was able to witness the original 1910 brick-laid “Buffalo Block” road underneath what is now Montana Avenue. Brad says, “It's always fun getting to dig up the past.” His expertise and enthusiasm will undoubtedly enhance our future projects. Way to go, Brad! As part of our Total Rewards program, our employee-owners are encouraged and supported in achieving their licensing goals. Learn more at https://bit.ly/4eOSXUY
