If you’re wondering why Hasbro is going digital games first, the conversation below will provide you an important part of the answer 👇

How did Monopoly GO make $3B in revenue in just one year? The Head of Licensing at Hasbro, Eugene Evans, breaks it down as follows: 🧐 Monopoly is already a game that people understand The first time user experience is a lot smoother because almost everyone has played Monopoly before. With less mental effort to learn a new game, Day 1 retention increases significantly. 🗣️When a friend says they are playing a Monopoly game, you are far more likely to give it a try With most games you have to explain how a game works, but if you say that you’re enjoying  a Monopoly game, your friend needs little explanation to try. Now a social activity, this network effect results in higher Day 30+ retention. 🃏 The Monopoly brand attracts non-gamers who are willing to play. When, for example, Disney licenses a game, one has to ask the question, "Well, what's the game?" They may instantly recognize the IP, but there is no inherent understanding of the premise or rules of the game itself. Conversely, Monopoly is both an IP and a game that has been attracting players for decades. So when people see an ad for a Monopoly game, they immediately have an idea of what the game is, significantly lowering customer acquisition cost. 🎯 Over the last 12 months, Hasbro, the IP owner of Monopoly and Dungeons & Dragons has become the top IP licensor in video games thanks to Monopoly Go! and Baldur's Gate III. This suggests that toy and board game brands might be the most valuable license in video games right now. In my latest Naavik episode, we dive into Eugene’s approach to overseeing the multi-billion dollar success of licensing Scopely's Monopoly Go! and Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate III, and explore Hasbro's future in video games. Full interview in comments!

We're thrilled to welcome our newest partner to the Open Gaming Research Initiative -- nSure.ai! More details on how they can prevent fraud in your games and boost revenues by +10-20% below 👇

During the pandemic, global gaming fraud surged by over 150%! As D2C payments rise in gaming, remember: fraud prevention is the flip side of payment enablement. Gaming is a known target for fraud, but the often-overlooked benefit is the revenue boost (stats below) for developers who actively fight it. To help raise this topic's awareness, Naavik has partnered with nSure.ai, an Israeli payment fraud prevention provider, in the Open Gaming Research Initiative. A big thank you to Christy Willingham 🔜 Gamescom and Zach Nass 🔜 Gamescom for making this happen! With two US patents, I personally found nSure.ai's approach to fraud prevention technology quite fascinating. It's also a new field of knowledge for me, which made going down this rabbit hole even more interesting. However, one of their products particularly stood out to me. nSure.ai SoftApproval™, uses behavioral tests on suspected fraudsters to generate data that enriches the fraud prevention model. This approach reduces fraud pressure and boosts approval rates by identifying legitimate clients who might have been wrongly declined. Hence, developers see a revenue boost. So how much of a revenue boost does it ultimately result in? Through their work with behemoths like Playstation, Xbox, Roblox, Steam, Nintendo, and Netflix, nSure.ai has measurably improved revenue by +10-20%. While that's quite meaningful at scale, fraud prevention is something developers of all sizes can pretty immediately benefit from. If you'd like an intro, DM or comment. And learn more about nSure.ai here: https://www.nsure.ai/

🕹 Nexon’s Search for a Fourth Pillar It’s a good time to check in on Nexon America – its stock is flirting with highs not seen since 2021 and its new CEO just wrapped up his first quarter at the helm. The Seoul-founded, Tokyo-headquartered developer and publisher completed a leadership transition in March 2024, with longtime CEO Owen Mahoney stepping into an advisory role after more than a decade in charge. He passed the torch to Junghun Lee, the former CEO of Nexon Korea Corporation, the company’s largest subsidiary. Lee takes over at a pivotal time. But where is he going to lead Nexon while the company searches for a fourth pillar? To find out, keep on reading here: https://lnkd.in/ezZgGXmv A big thanks to Matthew Dion for writing! For the first time in our industry, app store policies have evolved to give developers more choice and control over how we monetize our games than ever before. The presence of D2C payments in gaming is only rising, and naturally, so is the competition. But for Naavik, there is one provider that particularly stood out -- Neon! What exactly stood out? Here are my top three things: #1: An ambitious mission to redefine revenue for game developers -- "We build commerce tools that help game developers become enduring brands." #2: Fully-customizable webshops that leverages best practices from the broader ecommerce industry, so as to ensure the player journey between game and web purchase is seamless, personalized, and conversion-optimized. #3: As ‘merchant of record’ (which is critical to be), Neon handles payments, tax, fraud, and support so that players can buy how they want. Today, Neon is trusted by some of the biggest names in gaming. And we're glad to welcome Chris Faught and his highly experienced team (Apple Pay, Shopify, Stripe, Supercell, Affirm etc.) as the newest partner of our Open Gaming Research Initiative! Also, a big thank you to Alexandra Takei for putting Neon on our radar. If you'd like an intro, DM or comment. And learn more about Neon here: https://lnkd.in/eqMH6-Yu

Who am I seeing next Monday at devcom? Here’s a sneak peek of my talk “Defence Against Dark Arts: Using F2P Tactics to Gamify for Good”. (I swear I will never choose such a long title again.) I’ll be diving into how gamification can seriously level up long-term retention for mental health, fitness, and learning apps. Where Calm and Peloton Interactive reach D30 retention rates of 9-11%, Finch Care and Duolingo double it to 17-22%. I will talk about the secrets driving that difference, drawing from my research at Naavik. If you’d like to attend my talk, here are the details: Date: August 19th Time: 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM Location: Stage 3 - Mobile Track - Confex 2 Floor Add it to your calendar: https://lnkd.in/exFvY6ZX And if you’d like to work with me on gamifying your app in a truly authentic way to your users’ needs, comment or DM! 🧠 UEFN’s Progress & Challenges Unreal Editor for Fortnite(UEFN), which allows anyone to create their own content within Fortnite, is growing in both its versatility and the volume of UEFN creations. However, there’s a chronic lack of diversity and innovation in the content created thus far. Most of the popular creations are derivative of Fortnite’s gameplay and style, and this homogeneity poses a challenge to Epic's goal of expanding Fortnite into a vibrant, wide-ranging ecosystem. What is working on UEFN versus Roblox, based on what genres creators operate in and how the platforms monetize? To find out, keep on reading here: https://lnkd.in/eBQwhRYN Thanks for writing, Devin Becker! And a special thanks to Heroic Labs for making this digest issue possible!
