📢 Federal Judge Questions Apple’s 27% Fee on Linked Out Purchases U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers is scrutinizing Apple’s 27% fee on purchases made through outside payment platforms within a week of clicking an in-game link. During a recent hearing, evidence was presented including a study commissioned by Apple, which estimated the value of their services to developers at a range of 12.3% to 92%, with Apple arguing a low end of 17%. Judge Rogers, however, challenged Apple’s justification, calling their assumptions into question and highlighting the lack of concrete data. This case is part of Apple’s ongoing legal battle with Epic Games, which claims the fee stifles price competition, and comes amid broader industry pushback from companies like Meta, Microsoft, X, and Match Group. Apple is finally opening up web distribution for iOS apps in the EU. Of course, it isn’t as simple as that. Developers interested in distributing their apps directly must opt into Apple’s new EU business terms. Those terms require developers to meet certain notarization requirements and be in good standing with its developer program. But they also include a new “core technology fee” of €0.50 for each first annual install over 1M in the past 12 months, regardless of where apps are distributed. This has deterred a lot of developers from investing in this distribution strategy. On the bright side, iOS developers opting into the new terms can inform their users of cheaper offers available outside Apple’s App Stores. But that isn’t enough of a benefit to outweigh the €0.50 install tax. The European Commission is investigating Apple’s approach to several aspects of its DMA compliance. 🚨 More Apple Policy Changes: The European Commission has fined Apple over €1.8 billion for abusing its dominant position in the market for the distribution of music streaming services. Yesterday, the European Commission “found that Apple bans music streaming app developers from fully informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper music subscriptions services.” The investigation centered around Apple’s anti-steering provisions, which basically amounts to unfair trading conditions.
